- Abraham Lincoln. Franklin Roosevelt later tried to change it to the third Thursday to stimulate Christmas shopping, but after a public outcry Congress moved it to the fourth Thursday.
- The Mayflower Compact. It established authority within the group and freedom from English law.
- Massasoit. The leader helped the pilgrims survive their first winter and helped promote peace.
- Matariki, otherwise known as Maori New Year. It is named after a cluster of stars that can be seen just before dawn in early May.
- Minnesota, which is home to more than 250 turkey farmers and raises 49 million turkeys a year. North Carolina is second, Arkansas third and Virginia fourth.
- Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in a letter to his daughter that the turkey, "a bird of courage", suited the American culture more than a "bird of bad moral character" like the bald eagle.
