In Singapore, the food agency (SFA) has approved 16 species of edible insects for sale and consumption in the country.

The insects approved include locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms and several species of beetle.

To date researchers have recorded more than 2,100 edible species of insect across the globe.

And, many of these minibeasts are packed with important vitamins and minerals.

According to a 2022 report by the World Economic Forum, "insects are an overlooked source of protein and a way to battle climate change."

In parts of Mexico, Grasshopper tacos are served as a popular delicacy.

Ants, crickets and even tarantulas are commonly eaten in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Cambodia.

And now, Singapore is joining them with chefs experimenting with ways to incorporate insects into dishes.
