The Kabeedies' Katie Allard at Glasto

City-based band The Kabeedies raced their way through a high-energy set at Glastonbury, impressing Radio 1 DJs Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens.

The indie act, who describe their sound as "rubbish pop," were picked for a slot on the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Introducing stage at the world famous festival after being put forward by Radio Norfolk's new music show ´óÏó´«Ã½ Norfolk Introducing.

The Kabeedies performed a 20-minute set on the Saturday night - one of the 23 bands who played over the three days after being nominated by ´óÏó´«Ã½ local radio stations.

It's the second year that the ´óÏó´«Ã½ has run an Introducing stage at the festival, which has helped propel bands into the nation's glare.

Lamacq's endorsement

Steve Lamacq was so impressed by the band's performance that he featured one of their live songs on his Glastonbury round-up, broadcast on Radio 1 on Monday, 30 June, 2008.

The teenage band - made up of singer Katie Allard, guitarist Evan Jones, bassist Rory Hill and drummer Francis 'Fab' Bell - have been together in their current line-up for just over a year, with their festival appearance their biggest highlight so far.

"We were really, really pleased with how we played," said Rory.

"The reaction and feedback we got from the crowd was great - just people we didn't actually know wandering up to us during the festival who recognised us and saying, 'We saw your set the other day and it was really cool.'"

The Kabeedies will play Latitude later this month

Celebrity watcher

Ex-Catatonia front woman Cerys Matthews was one of the people who stopped by to catch the group's set, while away from the spotlight the Norwich musicians got to see a few well-known faces as well.

"Backstage we kept bumping into famous people and it was bizarre, they were just sitting down drinking beer and we were like, 'Oh, we didn't realise they were here,'" said Rory.

With their Somerset trip over, The Kabeedies are now focusing their sights on the rest of the summer, but hope they will get a chance to entertain crowds at the legendary festival next year.

"We don't want to get too big-headed and carried away but it was incredible and we'd just love to play there again," said Rory.

"We've got Latitude coming up in a few weeks and we're in a festival mood now, so we're looking forward to that."

The Kabeedies will play Norwich's Hot City Sounds Festival at the B2, Sprowston Road, on Thursday, 10 July. The Brownies, Rigo Jancsi and Rupert join them on the bill.
