Trace the different stages of costume making, from concept to construction and discover the secrets hidden beneath the folds of garments from the 18th - 20th centuries.

The exhibition includes items from Carrow's extensive costume collection, which have rarely been seen in public.

Curator, Linda Wix says: "We decided on the subject of the Inside Story because it is not usual to see how a costume is made from the inside. In this exhibition you see the boning, seams, ties, stitching and fastenings."

An 18th century man's suit, 17th century leather stays and exquisite examples of sewing - all reveal the skills of tailors and dressmakers.

Cunning pattern cutting, boning, pads and tapes were all needed to create the final look and fine examples of needlework tools, boxes and machines show how this was achieved.

The exhibition is of general interest but the organisers hope it will be of particular interest to
schoolchildren and students on textile courses at all levels.

Viewing is possible on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3.30pm but visits must be arranged in advance.

To book an appointment telephone 01603 223870.

A series of talks complements the exhibition with themes ranging from corsets and crinolines to the tailor's art, needlework tools, sewing techniques and buttons.

"The exhibition is self explanatory, so you can take yourself round at your own pace.

"We are also there so everyone gets individual attention if they have any queries," says Linda Wix.
