AA: He gets some advice from a financial advisor.

LLP: How he loses his money is on the internet. He makes some very foolish and greedy decisions.

People lost millions in that internet crash. It was as big as Wall Street - and there were a lot of people who committed suicide. It wasn't necessarily hushed up but I think nowadays people think sod 'em - they've lost 拢30m, but then they made it quickly.

They poured in 拢4,000 and the next minute they're a millionaire, the next a billionaire, so people were losing paper money.

But nevertheless paper money means you go off and buy properties and the debts were vast.

AA: After all your books and drama series that you've written - many about the criminal fraternity - were you ever tempted to try something a bit dodgy yourself?

LLP: I think I do it all the time, but there's big dodgy...

AA: ..But you'd get away with it because you're smart.

LLP: I don't know. The thing that always lets people down is that they think they're clever.

The Great Train Robbery...it's hard to believe but they had no evidence against anybody, no clue.

They were so well schooled those robbers but Ronnie Biggs - who was not Mr Big in the Great Train Robbery - got a saucer of milk for a cat and put it out and they got a thumb print, ran it through the computer and: Ronnie Biggs. That little mistake - they had gloves on at all times.

The bullion raid - they've never found half the bullion. Half the people on the raid are in the nick.

The diamond dome robbery - I nearly had heart failure when that one was going down. I thought there's my plot!

You are dependent if you have chosen the life of crime. On the dome diamond heist that was some robbery. If they hadn't have been tipped off they would have gone straight thought the wall in the JCB.

What fascinated me was although the police were tipped off, can you imagine all those months, they were within inches of those diamonds. Logically I'm thinking I'm going to hit a safe house with those diamonds, how do I get away? I chose the river, so when I saw they also chose the river, I thought there's another bit of my plot there, but I think my plot is cleverer.
