The mathematician
and physicist Albert Einstein stayed in a cottage at Roughton
in Norfolk during the 1930s, after he left Germany in the wake
of Adolf Hitler's rise to power.
His visit
to Norfolk was part of a tour of Europe before he settled in
the United States, where he was granted permanent residency
in 1935, taking up a position at the Institute for Advanced
Study in Princeton.

Einstein
developed the special and general theories of relativity and
won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921 for his explanation
of the photoelectric effect.
