OMAGH MEMORIAL GARDEN
The site has a very poignant memorial garden at the Dromore
Road junction close to the centre of Omagh, County Tyrone.
Back in the late 1950鈥檚 five railway workers were
killed on the tracks in thick fog when a Derry train hit
them. The line has long since closed but a corner stone
from the old station now bears a plaque in this garden
which had become overgrown.
The garden area
(which is approximately the size of 录 of
a football pitch) was previously the site of the station
masters house and 200 yards from the scene of the tragedy.
The Memorial is very much in the public view to visitors
coming into the town centre and to the 2,500 houses in
the surrounding area.
Presently the garden is neither used
nor abused, but there was immense local concern for the
garden as the memorial is very important to the community.
OMAGH MEMORIAL GARDEN
- PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
CVNI (Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland) and local
volunteers were at the Memorial Garden on the Dromore Road
for the site transformation at 10.30am. The biodiversity
fair began in the town centre at noon and continued into
the afternoon.
There were biodiversity games for all the family, and,
with plenty of support for the volunteers on the garden site,
Omagh was alive with Springwatch fever.
大象传媒 Radio Ulster presenter Hugo Duncan was centre stage
with an outside broadcast of his programme from 1.30pm.
