Coalisland Canal

Coalisland grew up round the canal, which was built in the 18th century to export coal from the Tyrone coalfields. The canal was finally abandoned in 1954.

Thank you for sharing this history of the Coalisland Canal. My family emigrated to the USA from Coalisland around 1880. I've been there once, but I plan on returning for a visit this summer.

Dear Readers, Thank you so much for this information. My grandfather, I was told by my Mother, lived in Northern Ireland, and before moving to the USA at the turn of the century; worked in the coal mines. His name was James Thomas Muckian and having three brothers who might have worked there too. I am interested in dual citizenship in Ireland. Is there a way of obtaining a list of the workers for the coal mine, so that I could show that my Grandfather actually was there? It would be helpful for me to have that information for my citizenship and also a way of connecting me to my Grandfathers life. Thank you so much.

I have just watched the news film on the closure of Coalisland Coalmine. It was very interesting to watch as I was born in 1972 and remember my granny speaking about the mine.

I would love to speak to some of the people who worked there as I am doing a project soon for university and would like to find out more. If you worked there and wouldn't mind answering some questions please let me know by posting a comment.

Many Thanks.

I recomend that all steps be taken to keep and maintain a historic and useful facility that can be used to take dangerous cargos off our roads, encourage tourism and provide jobs for the community.
