Young musicians at the Beached Academy Let's Get Rocked!By Nadia Emam The third Beached Academy, at the University of Hull's Scarborough campus, is held the week prior to the festival in August and comprises of all things rock and roll: without the sex and drugs of course! Nadia went along as 'academy inspector'! It's School of Rock, minus Jack Black but add in former Little Angels rocker Toby Jepson keeping the 'students' in line; divide the music and lyrics and times it by a whole lot of fun and you've got the Beached H2008 academy. Toby Jepson doing some editing From the first day it was made clear that creativity is the key to success in this business. Working with top lyricists, instrumentalists and professional record producers, from shows such as The X-Factor and Scarborough’s own God of rock, Toby Jepson, there was magic from the very beginning. Although it is open to any age and level, the main clientele were young, garage playing musicians and overlooking technicians who had the dream but never had the chance to put it into reality. "No, the song will end at 2:11 exactly!" The days were filled with a mixture of everything from lighting and sound training, to writing and recording full records. There was something for everyone and nothing for the faint hearted. As the week progressed, so did friendships, undiscovered talents and of course the music. It was an action packed scheme full of hard work, treasured experiences and raw talent that has certainly been given a bright future future. The opportunities available to the budding musicians are now endless. Every single person who attended the academy will walk away with a recorded track of their band or personal written material where the potential of it is in their own hands. Get strumming The aim of the scheme was to train and entertain the artists, who are fighting their way through to gaining the star spot on the main stage. The successful artists will be performing alongside the likes of North Yorkshire’s growing fame, One Night Only. All artists at the academy will be rocking out on the ‘Truck Stage’ on the Thursday at Beached, which is dedicated to local, unsigned acts. The trainee technicians will be let loose to manage the sounds and light up the festival with their newly acquired talent.
