HMS
Nottingham : The engine room
The main engines are Rolls-Royce Olympus gas turbines. When both
are selected at full power they can drive the ship at around 30
knots.
The cruise engines are Rolls-Royce Tyne gas
turbines. When both of these are selected at full power they will
drive the ship at about 18 knots.
The cruise engines use a fifth of the fuel
required by the main engines and are subsequently the preferred
choice for normal running.
The gearbox is unidirectional and so the
shafts always rotate in the same direction. In order to achieve
astern propulsion a controllable pitch propellor is used. This allows
the pitch of the propeller blades to be altered from ahead to astern
whilst underway, without stopping the shaft or the engine.
