Asha Banjoko

blast reporter

Asha Banjoko, 20, is from Stockhill, Nottingham.

She's enthusiastic, full of energy and loves the limelight. She also admits to being a Gemini and having two sides - one nice, one wild.

My name is Asha. Asha means life and that's one of the best ways to describe myself, I love life. I'm enthusiastic full of energy and love the limelight. I'm also a Gemini so there are literally two sides to me. The nice side and the wild side.

The nice side I love to sing, write poetry and play the guitar. I've been playing the guitar since the age of six and began singing as soon as I could talk. I love to perform and have recently performed one of songs alongside my mum at BlackDrop a community open mic event in Nottingham. I've also performed my songs on the main stage at Nottingham Carnival.

At the age of 16 I had two of my poems published alongside writers such as Benjamin Zephiniah and Jean Buffong in the IC3: Penguin Book of New Black Writing. My published poems were also broadcast on 大象传媒 Radio Nottingham.

I've lived in Nottingham all my life, apart from the last two years where I've been studying for a BA(Hons) in Multimedia Communication and Culture. I begin my final year in September, the light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible.

I'm not entirely sure exactly what I'll do when I finish university but hopefully it will be something where I can apply my work into the community. Kind of like this. I've been to Jamaica twice, France loads of times, and I've been to Ghana, Gambia, Germany only once. Things I like are music, shopping for trainers (not shoes), my nana's dinners, Big Brother, travelling, Usher, and Nandos' chicken.

The wild side I can be quite mischievous and a bit naughty. Once I ate all of someones twelve pack of waffles at uni. The someone turned out to be the really nice girl who lived on my corridor. Oops!!!

My CD collection is one of the strangest you'll ever see. I like all sorts of music I listen to loads of RnB, loads of rap, a bit of dance and little soft rock and reggae. I've got all of Mary J Bliges albums, Notorious B.I.G and a Samantha Mumba album hidden a way. I love to go out clubbing and enjoy a drinking sessions. My favourite drink is passion fruit flavour Alize.

Things I dislike are shoe shopping, Girls Aloud, Kat Slater (from Eastenders), maths, Victoria Beckham, Burger King and creep crawly beetle things.

Blast is about letting younger people have a voice and being able to showcase their talents in away that wouldn't usually be available. This ranges from unsigned bands to people wanting to show their art.
