WORLD SERVICE

Regional variations appear in search for the world's favourite song

Hotel California by The Eagles is proving to be the Middle East's favourite song so far in 大象传媒 World Service's poll to find the world's most popular song.

To date, Bohemian Rhapsody is the favourite song in Europe; in the Americas and Asia it's Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu and Africa is opting for Thriller by Michael Jackson.

Tamil song, Rakamma Kaiya Thattu, by S.P.Balasubramainam and Swarnalatha (a song from the popular 1991 film, Thalapathi) still leads the World's Top Ten but Mariah Carey has leapt into second place with Hero.

大象传媒 World Service listeners around the globe have been voting for their all-time favourite song for nearly three weeks.

The results and final chart will be announced by Steve Wright in Wright Round the World on Saturday 21 December.

Online votes are coming in at the rate of three a minute.

So far, there have been votes from 141 countries including Bhutan, Bolivia and Belize but nothing yet from Alaska, Borneo or Greenland.

1200 different songs have been voted for and The Beatles - with 18 - have had most songs nominated.

Celebrities who have been telling the World Service about their favourite tracks include film star, Kevin Spacey, who chose Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin, and the Mercury Award winning Ms Dynamite, who opted for Bob Marley's classic, Redemption Song.

We've also heard from the Captain and crew of the ship MV Assets Pioneer in Singapore, who said their favourite was Sailing by Rod Stewart.
