New Tricks

Introduction

Alun Armstrong, James Bolam, Amanda Redman and Dennis Waterman return as an unlikely team of crack detectives in New Tricks, a six-part drama for 大象传媒 ONE from Wall to Wall Television, following the antics of three retired cops recruited by Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman) to reinvestigate unsolved crimes from the past.

Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman), Jack Halford (James Bolam) and Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) have long since handed over their badges and the world of 21st century policing is alien to them.

But their hunger to get a result - despite some unconventional means - is as strong as ever.

Crimes tackled by the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) include the fatal shooting of a young female police officer, art fraud in the Queen's collection and the murder of a young peace protester.

Murder and suicide at a country golf club, the 30-year-old case of a missing mother and baby and the abduction of a teenager left to die in a transport container also come under scrutiny, as Pullman and her team face a surprising incidence of cover-up and conspiracy.

The UCOS squad also have their own problems to deal with - Halford is haunted by the loss of his wife after a hit-and-run accident, Lane is on medication and obsessed with the death of a prisoner and Standing, a confirmed womaniser, is bankrupt and about to become a granddad.

Pullman, too, has to face up to a personal dilemma - is she married to the job?

Producer Gina Cronk says: "Our detectives have become a strong team but they are each driven by internal conflicts. It's only a matter of time before these dilemmas spill over into their work.

"But, although the cases they investigate are shocking and traumatic, humour is never far from the surface, thanks to their personalities and the unorthodox methods they use to get a result."

Executive Producer Mike Dormer says: "The unique line up of talent on New Tricks has struck a chord with the audience who turn on as much for the antics of the regular cast as for the crime stories.

"Watching James Bolam, Alun Armstrong and Dennis Waterman trying to corrupt Amanda Redman's Superintendent Pullman is a joy."

Filmed in and around London, New Tricks also stars Cherie Lunghi, Anthony Head, Robert Bathurst, Stephen Moore, Isla Blair, Patrick Baladi, Jamie Glover, Robert Pugh, Christine Kavanagh, Susan Jameson, Diana Kent and Adam Kotz, with Chik茅 Okonkwo as PC Clark and Nicholas Day as Pullman's boss Bevan.

Created by Roy Mitchell and Nigel McCrery, New Tricks is produced by Wall to Wall Television, the company behind the award-winning A Rather English Marriage, Our Boy, Sex Chips & Rock n Roll and Glasgow Kiss.

New Tricks is written by Roy Mitchell, Simon Block, Nick Fisher and Alison Hume and directed by Paul Seed, Jamie Payne and Jon East.

The executive producers are Mike Dormer and Alex Graham.

New Tricks begins on 大象传媒 ONE at 9.00pm on Thursday 1 April 2004.
