大象传媒 TWO Winter
Geoff Breton, Rasmus Hardiker and Nicholas Shaw star in The Rotters' Club

大象传媒 TWO - Winter highlights 2005

Introduction - Expect the unexpected this winter on 大象传媒 TWO

This winter 大象传媒 TWO crosses time, continents and generations to discover hidden places, extraordinary people and fresh ideas.

Says Roly Keating, Controller of 大象传媒 TWO: "Viewers can expect an eclectic mix of the surprising, the intelligent and the funny on 大象传媒 TWO this winter.

"The controversial Jerry Springer - The Opera lines up alongside Ann Widdecombe's new role as an agony aunt, explorer Bruce Parry shares his experiences with six of the remotest tribes in the world, and we look at life through children's eyes as they take control of the camera.

"This is a schedule with some very unique perspectives on the world around us."

Sixty years after the liberation of the Nazi death camps, a major new series from the makers of The Nazis: A Warning From History goes deep into the untold story of Auschwitz.

As specially commissioned 大象传媒 research reveals that almost half the population (45 per cent) have not even heard of Auschwitz, the series offers a timely and unique perspective on a camp in which more than one million people were ruthlessly murdered.

It forms the centrepiece of the 大象传媒's commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day*.

In Tribe, explorer Bruce Parry is prepared to do anything to experience the lives and customs of six of the remotest tribes in the world, from Gabon to Ethiopia to Papua New Guinea.

The series offers an intimate, revelatory and humane picture of communities normally ignored by western society.

My Life As A Child gives the cameras to young children, aged seven to 11, in a series that puts them in control to show us the world as they see it.

Filmed in their own time and on their own terms, the series is funny, touching and challenges adult preconceptions about what's important and meaningful to young minds.

Ann Widdecombe knows her mind and rarely shirks from telling others exactly what she thinks. In The Ann Widdecombe Project, the formidable politician steps into a new role as 大象传媒 TWO's own agony aunt and attempts to solve family crises, love quandaries and workplace spats.

America's favourite talk show host has his own share of problems when he faces the worst day in his career in Jerry Springer - The Opera.

This winter on 大象传媒 TWO, the award-winning and controversial opera comes to television for the first time.

Sir Alan Sugar is the very model of a successful entrepreneur and in The Apprentice he's looking to help develop the best young business talent to join his empire.

Under Sir Alan's watchful eye, the candidates carry out weekly assignments to test their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills - they will all learn a lot but if they don't make the grade, they're fired.

Michael Cockerell has gained remarkable behind-the-scenes access to the notably camera shy Leader of the Opposition and his former fashion model wife, Sandra Paul.

In Cockerell On Howard the couple are filmed at work, at play and talk candidly about their lives.

Compulsion is a revealing series of documentaries about what it really means to be in the grip of addictive behaviour.

It focuses on people such as James, whose addiction to gambling has lost him his home, his wealth and his family. All he has left are fragments of his past.

大象传媒 TWO takes a step back into the Seventies with Jonathan Coe's novel The Rotters' Club, adapted for television by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

It's the evocative story of three Birmingham families set against a backdrop of class conflict and strike action, starring Sarah Lancashire, Hugo Speer, Mark Williams and Kevin Doyle.

Artfully parodying the style of Seventies television, Look Around You is back in a new bigger and better 30 minute format.

This comedy series looks at how the future might have been, but thankfully never was!

Finally, Martin Freeman (The Office) is back with a new role as the black sheep in a bog standard, 'run of the mill', south London family, in the out of the ordinary new comedy, The Robinsons.

Other highlights this season include:

With 85 per cent of 23 to 40-year-olds citing paying off their mortgage as their biggest single ambition, financial consultant Jasmine Birtles sets eight households the challenge to Pay Off Your Mortgage In Two Years.

In Around The World In 80 Treasures, Dan Cruickshank takes on the challenge to visit 80 of the world's greatest historic monuments - and not to come back until he has done so.

An Arena programme explores the genius and enigma that was Francis Bacon. Arena is the only broadcaster since Bacon's death in 1992 to be granted exclusive permission to make a film about his life.

And Pakistani Nights, puts the world of Britain's Pakistani community centre stage in a series of documentaries about what it means to be a Pakistani in contemporary Britain.

*Notes to Editors

As well as Auschwitz, the 大象传媒's commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day includes the Holocaust Memorial Day Event at Westminster Hall attended by HM The Queen and Holocaust - A Music Memorial Film From Auschwitz, both on 大象传媒 TWO.

A documentary, Grandchild Of The Holocaust, will be screened on 大象传媒 ONE.

The 大象传媒 research findings were based on a nationally representative postal survey of 4,000 adults aged 16+ conducted by IPSOS RSL as part of their weekly Quest survey.
