The 2006 Winter Olympic Games on the ´óÏó´«Ã½

´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport uses StroMotion technique for first time in UK
Ìý
´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport is leading the way in sports broadcasting innovation by using a technique never before seen on British television - called StroMotion - as part of its Winter Olympic Games coverage (´óÏó´«Ã½ TWO from 10 to 26 February).
Ìý
StroMotion is an image enhancement which creates stunning trajectory video footage revealing the evolution of an athlete's movement, technique, execution and tactics over space and time.
Ìý
´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport viewers will be allowed to see an athletic movement, such as the line of a skier, unfold before their eyes by compounding video images into a frame-by-frame sequence.
Ìý
The StroMotion concept is based on stroboscoping, a means to analyse rapid movement so that a moving object is perceived as a series of static images along the object's trajectory.
Ìý
StroMotion special effects adds particular value to winter sports.
Ìý
For example, the StroMotion technique applied to an ice skater during a jump allows us to clearly see the technique and quality of its execution by highlighting the preparation phase, the elevation progression, the inclination and straightness of the body and the quality and speed of execution. Ìý
Applied to the Half-pipe event, the StroMotion allows viewers to fully appreciate the technique and the quality of aerial manoeuvres (spontaneity, elevation, landing) and highlights the different phases and their transitions.
Ìý
´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport will also be using SimulCam, a sport video enhancement based on the idea that whenever two athletes are competing at different times, but over the same terrain, their filmed performances can be composited into a single video showing both competitors seemingly competing together.
Ìý
SimulCam pictures show at each instant the relative position, speed and posture of the two competitors on a single display.
Ìý
Roger Mosey, ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport Director, said: "Innovation is very important to us in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sport, and our coverage of the Winter Olympics will showcase both new technology in the coverage - and greater choice of coverage for people with access to digital services.
Ìý
"The resurgence of skating in the UK and the number of people who enjoy skiing suggest that there's a big appetite for winter sports coverage, and this year's innovations means we can make it even more exciting by showing what one-tenth of a second's difference can mean in competition – the difference between a gold, or going home with nothing."
