大象传媒 Afrique, the 大象传媒's French for Africa service, has awarded Cameroon teacher
Daniel Ndongbou first prize in its 大象传媒 Afrique Talents competition.
听
Daniel
will receive one million CFA Francs for his radio feature on Cameroon female bus
drivers.
听
He beat more than a hundred budding radio journalists invited to produce a
radio feature on a subject of their choice.
听
There are only
a dozen female bus drivers in Cameroon and Daniel's report explores how they continue to attract
controversial attention.
听
Daniel, who also had a feature shortlisted in 大象传媒
Afrique Talents in 2001, teaches in the city of Yaound茅 in Cameroon.
听
He said: "I am delighted. It is such an honour to have my work recognised by the 大象传媒.
听
"I
have loved radio since I was a child because my father listened to it all the
time."
听
Organiser of the competition, 大象传媒 Afrique senior producer Estelle Cornado, was
joined on the judging panel by 大象传媒 producer Maimouna Jallow, Cameroonian
writer Luc Bassong and Chadian playwright Nocky Djedanoum.
听
Estelle Cornado said: "Daniel was selected as the winner because his report was
original, lively and well-crafted.
听
"We were equally impressed by the high
quality and the originality of subjects submitted by all the participants and
struck by their sincerity and audacity - there are lots of very talented radio
programme makers out there."
听
The second prize went to Richard Pituwa, a journalist from Bunia in the DR Congo
who won a minidisk recorder.
听
His report looked at difficulties faced by young
people who return their weapons after the civil war.
听
The third prize of a solar
radio went to Alice Bafiala who has a degree in journalism from the University
of Kinshasa, DR Congo.
听
She focused on pastors who target bus commuters.
听
The
fourth prize winner of a short wave radio was awarded to Jocelyne Amoussou, a
freelance journalist in Cotonou, Benin.
听
She produced a feature looking at the
expense of funerals.
听
The fifth prize went to Marius Song from Yaound茅, Cameroon
who also received a short wave radio.
听
She followed the lives of people who work
in unofficial roles in public administrations in Cameroon.
