Nearly half (47 per cent) of people surveyed in a poll for 大象传媒 ONE's Six O'Clock News think Britain is a worse place to live than 20 years ago - with a 'lack of respect' and 'crime' among the main reasons cited by respondents.

Twenty-seven per cent of those asked think that Britain is neither better nor worse than 20 years ago, while 24% think it is now a better place.

The exclusive poll conducted by ICM is part of the early evening bulletin's look at the Changing Face of Britain - which includes a series of special reports this week (Monday 4 September to Friday 8 September).

The 74% who think it is either worse or no better to live in Britain than two decades ago were then asked to identify three key reasons to explain their views.

The main reasons cited were:

47% a lack of respect

46% crime

31% cost of living

28% terrorism

28% immigration

The 24% who responded that Britain is better than it was 20 years ago were asked to choose the biggest challenges facing Britain today. They identified 'terrorism' as the top challenge.

The results were:

44% terrorism

43% crime

34% environment

34% a lack of respect

33% quality of public services

26% immigration

Notes to Editors

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,006 adults living in Britain. Any use of the above findings must be credited to 大象传媒 ONE's Six O'Clock News.
