Five times as many young Asians as whites would only marry someone of the same race, a survey undertaken for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network suggests.

Ìý

The survey, undertaken by ICM, suggests that 44% of Asians would only marry someone from the same race compared to just 9% of white respondents.

Ìý

The survey, commissioned as part of the radio station's Asian Nation season looking at the state of mind of UK Asians in 2007, suggests the Asian population of the UK has markedly different attitudes to friends and relationships compared to their white counterparts.

Whilst 87% of white people would consider a mixed race marriage, according to the survery, just 53% of Asians felt the same.

Fifty-three per cent of Asians would consider dating someone who is white and 44% of Asians would consider dating someone who is black, whilst 44% of Asians would not consider dating a white person and 53% of Asians would not consider dating a black person.

Twice as many young white people would go out with a black person as would a young Asian. While 83% of white people would consider dating a black person, just 44% of Asians would do so, according to the survey.

Homosexuality

Young Asians appear to have a very different attitude to homosexuality compared to whites – 44% of young Asians surveyed think homosexuality is immoral compared to 8% of young white people.

Friends

Thirty-one per cent of Asians say that all or most of their friends are from the same race compared to 69% of white people, according to the survey.

ICM Research interviewed two separate samples of people under 34 years.

Ìý

Firstly, 500 Asian 16 to 34-year-olds by telephone on 4 to 11 July 2007. Interviews were conducted across the country and the results weighted to the profile of 16-34-year-old Asians.

Secondly, ICM interviewed 235 white 18 to 34 year olds by telephone on 6 to 12 July. Interviews were also conducted across the country and the results weighted to the profile of white 18-34-year-olds.

ICM is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.

"Asian" refers to people identifying themselves as Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Sri Lankan.

Asian Nation on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network is a series of programmes and reports to mark the 60th anniversary of the independence of India and Pakistan this August which explores the roots, lives and music of young British Asians in the UK today.

It is the biggest, most ambitious project that the Asian Network has ever undertaken on the South Asian subcontinent and is part of a season of programmes across ´óÏó´«Ã½ television, radio and online called India & Pakistan '07.
