Radio 3 Awards For World Music announce nominations for 2008 "Planets"

The 大象传媒 Radio 3 Awards for World Music celebrate their seventh birthday with dazzling nominations from around the globe and add a brand new awards ceremony.

This year's awards introduce a new awards ceremony, the first of its kind in the awards' history, to be held at Dingwalls, Camden on 10 April 2008.

The event, for which members of the public can apply for tickets via the 大象传媒 Audience Lines, adds a new dimension to the awards alongside the traditional celebratory Poll Winners' Concert in the summer.

The April awards event will feature all the regular trappings of an awards ceremony, with live performances, videos, winners announced on the night and presented with their Planets.

The evening is being hosted by Mary Anne Kennedy (one of the new voices of world music on Radio 3) and is being recorded for broadcast the following night in a new, expanded, prime-time slot on Radio 3, from 7.00 to 8.45pm.

Full details of the awards ceremony including the live performers and tickets details will be announced next month.

The Radio 3 Awards For World Music are an internationally renowned mark of excellence and have been instrumental in helping many artists reach a broader international audience.

Last year's awards were broadcast live to over 25 countries, with countless more watching or listening online.

Designed by Croatian sculptor Anita Sulimanovic, the coveted Planet has been won by diverse luminaries such as Mariza, Yat Kha, Konono No. 1, Orchestra Baobab, Gotan Project, Ry Cooder, Manu Chao, Nitin Sawhney, Ali Farka Tour茅, Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliza Carthy and Gogol Bordello.

The nominees for this year's Planets include acclaimed Franco-Spanish pop star Manu Chao, trancey desert bluesmen Tinariwen and Algerian rebel rocker Rachid Taha. Malian ngoni virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate picks up two nominations including Best Newcomer, while the club friendly Balkan Beat Box are nominated in three categories.

Electro-tango outfit Bajofondo Tango Club (who play the Royal Festival Hall on 4 April) pick up two nominations. Other names to watch out for include sublime Cape Verdean diva Mayra Andrade (performing at the Barbican on 16 March in a double-bill with fellow nominees Son De La Frontera), South African diva Simphiwe Dana (QEH on 21 February), and the stunningly beautiful Sa Ding Ding, who has been described as China's answer to Bjork.

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of the remarkable Belize musician and champion of Garifuna culture, Andy Palacio, a nominee in the Americas category, who died on 19 January. Palacio's unique cultural contribution will be recognised at the award winners' ceremony in April.
