She Loves You by The Beatles is the No. 1 best-selling record of the Sixties in a chart compiled especially for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 and broadcast today, Monday 31 May 2010.
The Top 60 Best Selling Records Of The 60s is presented by Tony Blackburn and can be heard on Radio 2 between 10am-2pm this Bank Holiday Monday. The chart is compiled by The Official Charts Company from sales data collated from 1 January 1960 to 31 December 1969.
Tony Blackburn says: "This countdown brings back many fantastic memories and offers listeners four hours of great tracks from the decade whose music influenced the world like no other. It comes as no surprise to see the Fab Four at No. 1, but other aspects of the chart are perhaps a little unexpected.
"For example Ken Dodd, The Seekers and Engelbert Humperdink all attain higher chart positions than The Rolling Stones, Elvis and Cliff Richard, with Dodd's Tears making it to the No. 3 spot. And there's no place in the chart for The Move's Flowers In The Rain, the first record I played on Radio 1 back in 1967."
Jeff Smith, Head of Music, Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: "This chart is a nostalgic reflection of the enduring appeal of the music of the Sixties and the artists that defined the decade and continue to influence today. Music from this decade is hugely popular with the Radio 2 audience – illustrated by the fact that Brian Matthew's Sounds Of The Sixties is the joint-highest rating show on Radio 2 at the weekend – and we hope they enjoy this aural treat this Bank Holiday Monday."
As well as topping the chart, The Beatles hold the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 7 positions with I Want To Hold Your Hand, Can't Buy Me Love, I Feel Fine and the double A side We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper respectively. Ken Dodd's Tears, which became the biggest selling single in the UK in 1965 is at No. 3. The Carnival Is Over by The Seekers is at No. 6. Engelbert Humperdink's Release Me is at No. 8. Elvis's It's Now Or Never is at No. 9 and Tom Jones' Green Green Grass Of Home is at No. 10.
The Beatles also make up nearly one third of the chart with tracks in 18 of the 60 positions. They are followed by the Rolling Stones who are the second most featured artists with five singles, but none of which are in the top 30. Their first entry is The Last Time at No. 36. Cilla Black (Anyone Who Had A Heart at No. 27) and Mary Hopkin (Those Were The Days at No. 45) are the only two solo female singers in this male dominated chart. And in a decade many associate with the sound of Motown, not one of the 60 positions features a Motown record.
Alongside the music, the programme also relives some of the big news stories of the era with original archive footage of events.
The Top 60 Best Selling Records Of The 60s, presented by Tony Blackburn, is broadcast at 10am-2pm on Monday 31 May and is part of Radio 2's Sixties Season, marking the 50th anniversary of the start of the decade.
