Catherine Bott introduces a concert from the York Early Music Festival 2010

Catherine Bott introduces a concert from the York Early Music Festival 2010 , given by trio London Baroque, of 18th-century French music by Rameau, Leclair, Mondonville, the Forquerays and their contemporaries. The concert is described as "Marriage à la Mode" and, true to the theme of this year's festival, "musical marriages", all the pieces performed celebrate the familial ties that linked so many of Paris's major baroque composers.

Catherine Bott talks to the London Baroque's viol player, Charles Medlan, about the programme and the music.

World Routes

Saturday 2 October
3.00-4.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 3

Lopa Kothari and Jameela Siddiqi introduce a recital by Indian santoor virtuoso Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, accompanied by Anindo Chatterjee on tabla, recorded earlier this year at the Darbar Festival in London.

This is the last of three programmes from the 2010 Darbar Festival, which took place over the Easter weekend at Kings Place in London.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma is a revered maestro of Indian classical music. The santoor is a hammered dulcimer which was originally a Kashmiri folk instrument – it was Shiv Kumar Sharma who reinvented it as an instrument suitable for playing Indian ragas, adding strings and developing a new delicate but powerful style of playing.

Opera On 3 – Rigoletto

Saturday 2 October
6.00-8.45pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 3

Christopher Cook is at the Wales Millennium Centre for the much-anticipated debut of baritone Simon Keenleyside in the title role of Verdi's famously controversial tragedy, Rigoletto.

Welsh National Opera's revived production brings together director James McDonald and designer Robert Innes Hopkins to transport Verdi's Mantua to the Washington DC of the Kennedy era. It's a chance for the famously physical Keenleyside to recreate his court jester role as presidential aide, swimming in a pool of corruption, bullying and grotesque indulgence.

Also featured are American soprano Sarah Coburn, making her UK debut, and a return to WNO by much-loved Welsh tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones, in the role of the philandering and murderous Duke.

Rigoletto is sung by Simon Keenlyside (baritone); The Duke by Gwyn Hughes Jones (tenor); Gilda by Sarah Coburn (soprano); Monterone by Michael Druiett (baritone); Sparafucile by David Soar (bass); and Maddalena by Leah-Marian Jones (mezzo-soprano).

The Chorus and Orchestra of Welsh National Opera is conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado.

Toby, Richard, Deke and Clive are played by Jonathan Keeble; Craig and Scott by Andonis James Anthony; Tariq and Naz by Armand Beasley; Sheila by Sue Jenkins, Anastasia and Nurse Phoenix by Melissa Jane Sinden; and Stacey and Renata by Catherine Kinsella.

The Kane Conspiracy

Saturday 2 October
2.30-3.30pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

In 1941, Orson Welles's Citizen Kane picked up nine Oscar nominations and was already being spoken of as a work of genius. But there were powerful forces lobbying hard against it, not least among them William Randolph Hearst, the media mogul on whom the story is based, and FBI supremo J Edgar Hoover.

As the Oscar nominations are announced, Welles suffers an uncharacteristic attack of anxiety. And – not without cause – FBI supremo J Edgar Hoover has tasked a small-time FBI agent, special agent RB Wood, with making sure the film doesn't triumph at the Oscars ceremony. Hearst has banned any mention of the film across his media empire, RKO the distributor is looking shaky, and while the movie plays to capacity houses in art-house cinemas, no major theatres or cinema chains will take it. A chance encounter in an elevator leads to a highly charged head-to-head between Hearst and Welles – when the two men lay their cards on the table.

Only the character of agent Wood is imagined, although he is based on a documented but shadowy figure mentioned in the FBI archives. And it is Wood who finally confronts Welles with the uncomfortable truth about the film – in hijacking Hearst's life for Citizen Kane, Welles has replaced it with his own.

The Kane Conspiracy is written by Jonathan Holloway and stars Jeff Harding as Orson Welles; Toby Jones as J Edgar Hoover; John Guerrasio as Herman Mankiewicz; Peter Marinker as William Randolph Hearst; Garrick Hagon as George Schaefer; Val Jobara as Agent Wood; and Paul Mundell as the Radio Interviewer.

Archive On 4 – A Working-Class Tory Is Something To Be

Saturday 2 October
8.00-9.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

David Davis MP delves into the ´óÏó´«Ã½ sound archive to explore the history of the working-class Tories – from the Victorian trade union leader who stood as a Tory candidate, to Norman Tebbit in the Eighties, and on to the present day.

Ever since British mass democracy began, the working-class vote has played a crucial part in returning the Conservative Party to power. And yet, for many years, there was barely a handful of working-class Conservative MPs in Parliament.

But the rise of the working-class Tory culminated by the Eighties with the central presence in the Thatcher Cabinet of Norman Tebbit.

Edward Heath, Margaret Thatcher and John Major all came from "humble" backgrounds, in stark contrast to their aristocratic predecessors.

David Davis questions where the working-class Tory is today. On the one hand, Britain appears to some a much less hierarchical society but, on the other, it has its first Etonian Tory PM in almost half a century.

David Davis is a Tory from a working-class background – and is the man Cameron beat in 2005 for the Party leadership. In this programme, he talks to former and current working-class Tory cabinet ministers including Lord Tebbit and Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

He discovers why, in Oldham in 1899, one of Britain's toughest trade union leaders ran alongside Winston Churchill as a Tory candidate.

He explores how the Depression shaped the politics of future Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, many of whose Geordie voters were working class.

And he asks Norman Tebbit, Eric Pickles, election expert John Curtice and former Tony Blair speechwriter Philip Collins, who comes from a family of working-class Tories, what part they think this durable tribe now plays in Cameron's Britain.

YORK EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL 2010
The Early Music Show Opera Profile –
Blow: Venus And Adonis

Sunday 3 October
1.00-2.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 3

Catherine Bott introduces a performance of John Blow's masque Venus And Adonis, presented at the 2010 York Early Music Festival by Theatre of the Ayre directed by Elizabeth Kenny. This broadcast is given as part of the Early Music Show's monthly celebration of baroque opera, and the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s year-long focus on opera.

Venus And Adonis was the last masque ever composed for the Stuart court, and while it is in effect a miniature opera, it was intended as a vehicle for the members of the Royal court to take part in. John Blow crafted an exquisite allegory on contemporary court issues around the classical myth of the goddess Venus and her thwarted love for the mortal Adonis. It became the model for Purcell's celebrated Dido And Aeneas.

Catherine Bott talks to several of the participants in this production about the work, and introduces the performance which was given as the climax to this year's York festival.

Goodbye To Berlin Ep 1/2

New series
Sunday 3 October
3.00-4.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Goodbye To Berlin is Christopher Isherwood's dramatic eyewitness account of Berlin in the early Thirties, the book that inspired the musical and film Cabaret.

Living in Berlin as a young man, Isherwood encountered a range of vibrant characters whose daily lives reflect a city and its people at a very particular time in history. He observed at first hand how ordinary people, at every level of society, became sucked into the new era of Hitler and his kind.

Isherwood arrives in Berlin and takes lodgings with Fraulein Schröder, a once well-off widow now forced to take in a motley crew of lodgers. He's enthralled by Berlin's chaotic, hedonistic nightlife and the rich variety of characters he meets, including Jewish department store heiress Natalia Landauer; her cousin, the serious and troubled Bernhard; fantastical nightclub singer Sally Bowles; and the freeloading Otto Nowak. But as Isherwood grows to love the city and its people, he cannot ignore the growing influence of the Nazi party even in his own carefree circles.

The cast stars James Norton as Isherwood; Nicola Schoessler as Natalia Landauer; Leslie Malton as Fraulein Schröder/Sally Bowles; Julia Reznik as Fraulein Mayr; Matthias Horn as Herr Landauer; Andre Kaczmarczyk as Bernhard Landauer; and Tilmar Kuhn as Otto Nowak.

Recorded on location in East Berlin, this new dramatisation by Tina Pepler has a documentary feel that vividly evokes the atmosphere of the city and the lives of its inhabitants as the Nazi party slowly gains credence and ultimate power in the early Thirties.

Sound design is by Eloise Whitmore and the pianist is Paulette Marla Schmidt.

Quoting a diverse range of influences, from Serge Gainsbourg to Voyage, Ghent-based De Luca has become one of the hottest properties in dance music, with his signature cosmic-disco-flavoured sound packing out dancefloors at Bestival in the UK and Eden in Ibiza this summer.

The Jeremy Vine Show

Monday 4 to Friday 8 October
12.00noon-2.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 2

Jeremy Vine celebrates poetry this week to mark National Poetry Day on 7 October. Every day, Jeremy hosts discussions, listens to readings and explores, with his listeners, the unique potential for poetry to touch and change lives.

Each day's programme focuses on a different theme and poetry's ability to move, excite or comfort people, whether they are experiencing intense joy, grief, heart-stopping or gut-wrenching turmoil or pleasure. Subjects covered include love, war, death, places and children.

Each lunchtime this week, a listener reads out a meaningful poem and explains its particular appeal and relevance to them. Listeners are invited to join the discussion on what makes poetry so special and powerful in today's busy, multi-media world. The programme has two in-house poets, Mr Gee and Lucy Berry, who each write a poem to match the subject of the day during the show.

DJ, poet and presenter for ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 4's Sony Award-nominated series Bespoken Word, Mr Gee uses his African and Caribbean roots and hip hop DJ background to craft his unique lyrical style. Former poet-in-residence for The Jeremy Vine Show, Lucy Berry writes vividly, passionately and sometimes angrily about the pressures and pleasures of modern life. Their poems will also be uploaded at the end of the show to: bbc.co.uk/radio2 and listeners are invited to submit their poetry for publication online. Other online activity includes a specially filmed masterclass in poetry writing by Mr Gee.

Jeremy says "I had a poetry moment when I was at college. I suddenly realised I loved what I was reading – mainly Philip Larkin at that time. Nowadays TV and movies and the web have demolished attention spans and distracted us, but I think poetry is great for the internet age: it's short and pithy. So bring it on, Radio 2!"

The Musical Ep 5/8

Monday 4 October
10.00-11.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 2

American actress, comedian and star of the West End's Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg presents Something Borrowed, the fifth documentary in ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2's season of programmes celebrating The Musical.

All musicals, from the latest, most innovative show, to tried and tested favourites from an earlier century, make their impact by using music to transform the commonplace into the exceptional. In its early life, the musical was sometimes the product of East Coast Broadway impressarios. And at other times, it was the work of Hollywood's West Coast movie moguls. Inevitably, Broadway started looking to successful film stories, along with plays, as sources of inspiration for plots in musical theatre: All About Eve became the musical Applause, and a musical based on the film Ghost (in which Whoopi starred) is now in development.

In Something Borrowed, Whoopi looks at shows inspired by plays and films including Sunset Boulevard, West Side Story, A Little Night Music and Nine. The programme features contributions from Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Patti Lupone, Don Black, Michael Grandage, Jerry Herman, Tim Rice, Maury Yeston, Liz Robertson, Gillian Lynne and Richard Stilgoe.

Tim Rice can also be heard presenting Tim Rice's American Pie on Thursday evenings on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 2 at 11pm.

Monday 4 to Friday 8 October
12.00noon-1.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 3

This week Donald Macleod introduces Richard Wagner, a composer whose name instantly ignites controversy like no other.

Wagner's life was every bit as much of a titanic saga as the epic music dramas he invented. He was a young firebrand of 22 when he made his debut as an opera composer with Das liebesverbot (The Ban On Love), and the première was a fiasco, with fights on stage even before the curtain rose. His opera Rienzi was much more successful, capturing the revolutionary spirit of the time and putting Wagner's name on the map.

Frans de Waal's ground-breaking book, Our Inner Ape, argued that empathy, morality and the ability to co-operate are inherent in human nature. Such genetically endowed virtues, he believes – unlike many economists – drive evolution as much as the darker drives of competitiveness, aggression and selfishness. And all this is evident by studying the behaviour of our primate cousins. De Waal believes we should turn to primatologists, not sociologists to understand human behaviour – and in 2007 he was on Time's List of the 100 most influential people in the world.

He talks to Rana about how his new work extends these arguments to suggest that the behaviour of other animals, particularly monkeys, contains many lessons for those seeking to build a more just human society.

The Essay – The Stewarts

Monday 4 to Friday 8 October
11.00-11.15pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 3

Writers and academics explore aspects of the Stewart dynasty, in this week's series of essays.

In tonight's programme historian and author Dr Fiona Watson looks at the bloody comeback of James I, King of Scots (1394-1437), one of the most powerful and controversial kings of the medieval Stewart dynasty.

It's not the greatest start to life when your elder brother gets murdered in a castle dungeon by your wicked uncle, who's muscling in on your sick father; but then it only gets worse for young Prince James. While being sent to safety in France aged 12, he was kidnapped by English pirates. The very next month, his father died and the young prisoner became King of Scots, spending 18 years in captivity.

A vital part of this time was spent at the court of Henry V, the victor of Agincourt. This would influence the rest of James's life, giving him fresh (and if you were one of his nobles you might say "worrying") ideas of what a monarch should be and how a country should be run. The return of the King to Scotland would not only bring bloody vengeance upon the family of his late uncle, the Duke of Albany, but a new and energetic style of kingship. However, James had a tendency to take things just a bit too far.

British Museum director Neil MacGregor
British Museum director Neil MacGregor

British Museum director Neil MacGregor explores the often troubled relationship between Europeans and the rest of the world, as he continues his history of the world through 100 items from the museum.

In today's programme Neil tells the story of a now-fragile African drum. It was taken to America during the years of the slave trade, where it came into contact with Native Americans.

The drum was brought to England by Sir Hans Sloane, whose collection helped provide the British Museum with its first material. This drum, the earliest African-American object in the museum, is a rare surviving example of an instrument whose music was to profoundly influence American culture – bought to America on a slave ship and transported to Britain by a slave owner. Historian Anthony Appiah and writer Bonnie Greer consider the impact of this drum.

Sex, Porn And Teenagers

Monday 4 October
8.00-8.30pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Presenter Miranda Sawyer investigates teenage sexual culture from internet porn to the meaning behind different colour "shag bands".

"Shag bands" are thin, coloured rubber bracelets, indicating how far the wearer will go sexually if the band is broken.

Purple for a kiss or yellow for a hug may seem comparatively harmless but some of the other colours such as black for full intercourse or blue for oral sex ring alarm bells.

A Wakefield MP recently campaigned to stop shops selling them after complaints from parents including a mother who innocently bought some for her six-year-old child's party bag. Elsewhere schools have banned "shag bands" after finding pupils wearing them.

Part of playground culture, they're often worn innocently or in a show of bravado, but there is a darker side where early sexual exploration strays into the easily accessible world of internet porn. Where children once passed notes, they now use their mobile phones to share explicit images and there's peer pressure through social networking sites.

Miranda, herself a mother, investigates whether society and parents are aware of just what their children are getting up to and asks how concerned should we be about the sexualisation of children in media, advertising and fashion, such as the sale of padded bras for pre-pubescent girls or sexual references on T-shirts for primary aged kids.

Jac Holzman's Elektra Story Ep 1/3

Tuesday 5 October
10.00-11.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 2

Paul Gambaccini charts the history of Elektra Records
Paul Gambaccini charts the history of Elektra Records

Paul Gambaccini presents a three-part series charting the history of Elektra Records, 60 years after it was founded by Jac Holzman on 10 October 1950.

Primarily a New York folk label, with influential singers Judy Collins, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton, the company explored new avenues from the mid-Sixties when Jac signed West Coast artists Love, Tim Buckley and The Doors. Further chart success followed with the development of artists such as Bread, Carly Simon and Harry Chapin.

The series features interviews with Jac Holzman and many of his artists: Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, Judy Collins, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore (The Doors), David Gates (Bread), Tom Paxton, Joshua Rifkin, Jean Ritchie, Tom Rush and Carly Simon; plus Elektra executives Danny Fields and Clive Selwood, engineer/producer Bruce Botnick and session man at the time John Sebastian.

In part one, Jac Holzman and Elektra artists recall the early years of his label. Canadian Oscar Brand remembers his boisterous albums of songs associated with the armed services; Kentucky singer Jean Ritchie recalls her earliest recordings released by the label; and Theodore Bikel talks about his many Elektra concept albums devoted to songs from a variety of different countries and cultures. Carly Simon remembers Theo's albums with affection and sings snippets from his multi-lingual repertoire.

After 10 years of modest success, Elektra found itself well placed in New York's Greenwich Village to record singers emerging in the first half of the Sixties – a period of unprecedented enthusiasm for folk music. Jac discovered his first star of the decade when he signed Judy Collins in 1962.

Judy was joined on Elektra by many of the new generation of young folk singers – the prolific writer Tom Paxton, protest singer Phil Ochs and, from the Cambridge scene, Tom Rush. Hanging out in Greenwich Village and playing harmonica on many Elektra record sessions was future Lovin' Spoonful member John Sebastian. Jac Holzman also found an ally in his quest for quality artists when he employed Paul Rothchild as talent scout and record producer.

This revised series was first broadcast in six parts in 2008.

The singer is one of the world's most sought-after mezzo-sopranos, Angelika Kirchschlager from Austria.

Prokofiev's popular Fifth Symphony is his plushest and grandest, a work of affirmation and abounding melody composed in 1944, when victory in the war against Nazism was in sight.

Saving Species Ep 6/23

Tuesday 5 October
11.00-11.30am ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Woodlands are important all over the world for wildlife and many things can impact on them. Saving Species continues by asking if rutting deer are a problem for woodlands.

This is the time of year when many deer species begin their breeding season and reporter Chris Sperring goes to Exmoor at the peak of the fallow deer rut.

Like most mammals it's the female deer that take on all the parental responsibility, the male role being reduced to providing the sperm. With none of the energy drain of raising young, clearly males can mate with many females. But it's not so easy. Females are choosy and want the best male they can get.

This sexual inequality in reproduction fuels the competition between males to win the favour of the gathering females. The deer rut is an explosive time, with intense bellowing and physical duels.

Deer numbers are rising in Britain and many other parts of the world, so much so that woodland ecologists are concerned about re-generation because of the volume of young saplings browsed by deer.

Three Short Stories By E Nesbit Ep 1/3

New series
Tuesday 5 to Thursday 7 October
3.30-3.45pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Marriage Lines is the first of three stories for adults written by E Nesbit, author of The Railway Children.

The stories in this series are taken from In Homespun, a collection originally published in 1896. They are set in the villages of South Kent and East Sussex that Nesbit knew well.

Read by actress Jenny Agutter, each story is told in the first person, by a variety of strong, female characters looking back on their earlier lives.

Marriage Lines is a comic detective story-cum-romance. Harry, the son of the house, wants to marry Poll, but the delightfully wicked old housekeeper has other ideas. When the old man dies unexpectedly, poison is suspected. But there is a surprising twist in the tale.

In the second tale on Wednesday, The Bristol Bowl, Jane’s aunt is a real ogre to work for, but Jane is after her money, so she puts up with it. Everything is going to plan, until the day Jane smashes The Bristol Bowl, her aunt’s prize piece of porcelain. That disaster takes her on her first trip to London and a surprising offer of marriage.

In the final story on Thursday, Grandsire Triples, Kate’s intended comes back from learning farming, a Catholic. Kate is torn between duty and love, a conflict that is dramatically resolved when the two lovers inadvertently get locked in the bell tower, during a "grandsire triple peal".

The Secret Science Of Pee

Tuesday 5 October
9.00-9.30pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

A research team at an Edinburgh University think they've cracked the answer to providing renewable, commercially viable and environmentally friendly energy from urine.

Harvesting the multitude of medically powerful ingredients it holds could become big business. An innovative Danish company is turning it into plastics; it may provide a means of easily accessing hydrogen for green cars; and it could hold the key to providing desperately needed shelter for displaced multitudes across the world.

The scientific applications for this wonder substance seem almost to be without end – but the downside is many people's attitude to it. Most are squeamish at the mere mention of urine, blinding them to its astonishing versatility and potential.

In The Secret Science Of Pee, Sally Magnusson provides a truly surprising and enlightening look at some of the more extraordinary and innovative contemporary scientific applications for urine.

She asks why many are so uncomfortable with even talking about this casually despised blood product when it has been an essential part of life for centuries – and she considers the shocking environmental cost of flushing away such an abundant and abundantly useful substance.

Jazz Junctions Ep 1/10

New series
Wednesday 6 October
10.00-11.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 2

Guy Barker explores the history of jazz, focusing on the turning points and pivotal events that have shaped the genre, and discovering some great stories and larger-than-life characters along the way in this new 10-part series.

In its 100-year history, jazz has seen many changes and developments but, unlike other genres, jazz's direction has frequently changed due to a specific event: a momentary decision, an invention, one performance, or one person's idea. Each episode focuses on what jazz was like directly before this junction, the junction itself, and how things subsequently changed.

Renowned jazz trumpeter and composer Barker says: "As a musician, I'm really impressed with the range of talent showcased in this series and very much look forward to introducing what, to me, is a definitive jazz hall of fame."

Barker explores each of these junctions by hearing from the musicians who were there and made it happen, shaping the music as they went. The series features rare archive of jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan and Earl Hines.

There are new interviews with the world's greatest living jazz musicians, such as McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Buddy DeFranco, Jimmy Cobb, Kenny Burrell, Reggie Workman, Lou Donaldson, Dave Brubeck, Terry Gibbs, Sir Charles Thompson, Peter Erskine, Larry Coryell, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Junior Mance, Dick Hyman, Billy Taylor and Albert "Tootie" Heath, as well as commentary from leading jazz authorities Ted Gioia, Loren Schoenberg, Dan Morgenstern, Stuart Nicholson, Geoffrey Smith and Scott Yanow.

Part one, Jazz On The Record, takes the story back to February 1917 with the release of the first jazz record: Livery Stable Blues by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, led by cornettist Nick LaRocca. Prior to that, jazz had been played on the streets and in the clubs, but only by those who were there to witness it. Recording the music meant that it could be listened to again and again by people all over the world and, most importantly, it could be studied and imitated. The journey had begun.

Guy looks back to the New Orleans of 1910 to try to unravel the circumstances surrounding the birth of recorded jazz. The programme features interviews with Dick Hyman, Jimmy LaRocca, Ted Gioia and Scott Yanow; plus archive of Jelly Roll Morton and Nick LaRocca.

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the music of his compatriot Jean Sibelius in this concert recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Sibelius's tone poem Finlandia sets the soundworld with its nationalistic evocations of scenes from Finnish history; followed by Lemminkäinen, an orchestral suite based on the Finnish national epic poem, the Kalevala. The most famous movement describes The Swan of Tuonela with the cor anglais' melody gliding over the musical water of the strings and woodwind; the other movements are equally evocative and atmospheric, moving from the Land of the Dead to the hero's exploits in battle.

The release of the band's new EP, The Wrong Car, coincides with a joint headline tour with Errors in September. The drama features Kulvinder Ghir (Goodness Gracious Me) as Jugjit, Balvinder Sopal (Silver Street) as Rani, Pushpinder Chani as Harvey and Manjeet Mann as Sandeep; with other voices by Deeivya Meeir and Adeel Akhtar.

This programme will be repeated on Sunday 10 October at 4.30pm on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Asian Network.

Pianist Mitsuko Uchida

Petroc Trelawny introduces a solo recital given by pianist Mitsuko Uchida as part of the South Bank Centre's International Piano Series. The concert opens with Beethoven's two-movement Sonata Op 90, an intense piece that traces a path from conflict to tranquillity. Uchida continues with Schumann's whimsical cycle Davidsbündlertänze, which shows the composer at his most effervescent and poetic.

The second half is devoted to Chopin, principally his Piano Sonata No. 3, which mixes Chopin's personal romanticism with the traditional form of a grand four-movement sonata.

Monday 4 to Friday 8 October
9.45-10.00am ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Neil MacGregor continues his world history as told through objects from the British Museum with a look at an Aboriginal bark shield brought from Australia by Captain Cook

The Aboriginal shield was originally owned by one of the first men to set eyes on Europeans as they descended on Botany Bay nearly 250 years ago. This remarkably well-preserved object was brought to England by explorer James Cook, whose HMS Endeavour was the first British ship to land in Australia, in April 1770.

Phil Gordon, Aboriginal Heritage Officer at the Australian Museum in Sydney, and historian Maria Nugent help tell the story and look at what this object can reveal about the early encounter between the two different cultures.

The Lennon Visitors

Thursday 7 October

Every year 8,000 people pay homage to John Lennon at his childhood home in Liverpool. Comedian Alexei Sayle meets some of those who take the tour.

Alexei took the National Trust tour himself in 2009 and was so taken by its Fifties charm and spirit that he returns to meet custodian Colin Hall to find out what it's like to live in one of the most famous houses in Liverpool.

Alexei speaks to some of those who visited the house when John Lennon lived there, including John's cousin Mike; Colin Hanton, the drummer in John Lennon's band the Quarrymen; and Freda Kelly, The Beatles' fan club secretary.

The Lennon Visitors is broadcast as Liverpool celebrates what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday on 9 October.

Afternoon Play – Visitors

Thursday 7 October
2.15-3.00pm ´óÏó´«Ã½ RADIO 4

Visitors is the final play written by Peter Tinniswood just before his death in 2003, and this is its first ever performance.

Set on a misty Thames embankment over the course of several evenings, the play recounts the meetings of two hospital "visitors" – Shacklock and the much younger Stella. Their relationship – strange, erotic and yet seemingly entirely innocent – is the bedrock of this drama about the shortness of life and the frailty of love.

Shacklock is played by Roy Hudd and Stella by Emma Fielding. The play is abridged for radio by Liz Goulding.

Visitors is broadcast in the week the Tinniswood Award is presented to the author of the best original radio play of 2009.

Thursday 7 October

Marc Riley welcomes Smoke Fairies back to the ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6 Music Manchester studios to play another live session.

The band – best mates Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies – released their debut album, Through Low Light And Trees, in September. None other than Jack White was early to respond to their music after hearing one of their self-released singles, offering to produce a track on his Third Man label at his Nashville studio. Recorded in just 36 hours, with White on drums (plus a "mad guitar solo" on River Song) and his Raconteurs/Dead Weather pal Jack Lawrence on bass, the single Gastown/River Song was released in December 2009.

After another spell of writing last winter the Fairies headed for Sawmills studio in rural Cornwall to start work on their debut album with producer Head (best known for his work with PJ Harvey) and their current live band. After touring with Richard Hawley across Britain late last year they headed off to the US to support Laura Marling for a month. Most recently Jessica and Katherine added supernatural, angelic backing vocals to Hawley's current EP, False Lights From The Land.

The programme also finds out more about the British Museum's new exhibition China: Journey To The East. China's long history of innovation in the arts has created one of the most important and influential civilisations in world history. The major new exhibition in Manchester will combine objects from the British Museum with stories from one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

Also British film is celebrated with critic James Kleinmann, plus Penny speaks to graffiti pioneer Nick Walker about his new solo show In Gods We Trust. Monday 4 to Friday 8 October

Neil MacGregor concludes a week of considering the world of discovery in the 18th century.

He describes what was happening in China during this period, as the country was experiencing its own Enlightenment under the Qianlong Emperor.

Today he tells the story of the Chinese Enlightenment through a jade ring (called a Bi) that was probably made around 1500BC and then written over during the Qing dynasty.

Historian Jonathan Spence and poet Yang Lian find meaning in this intriguing object and explore what the prehistoric piece of jade tells us about life in 18th-century China.

Afternoon Play – Maidens' Trip

Friday 8 October

Maidens' Trip follows the adventures of three 18-year-old girls who signed on with the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company to replace workers drafted overseas.

Quite literally thrown in at the deep-end, Emma, Charity and Nanette embark on their maiden voyage carrying steel north by canal from London to Birmingham. They surmount the dangerous, back-breaking work thanks largely to an endearing mix of youthful bravado and blissful ignorance. As they steer their way through the "other world" of the boat people, the girls, often out of their depth, face up to an assortment of challenges with courage and good cheer.

The cast stars Greta Scacchi in the role of Tilly; Emma Wachter as Emma; Emerald O'Hanrahan as Charity; Georgia Groome as Nanette; Rufus Wright as Wilfred; Sean Baker as Mr Silver; and Lloyd Thomas as Eli Silver.

Friday 8 October

In July 2010, in the midst of the financial crisis, Maywood, a small city down the highway from Los Angeles, took the radical step of laying off almost all of its city employees.

Policing in Maywood was handed over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and other city services were outsourced to the nearby city of Bell. According to Mayor Ana Rizo, it was either this step or bankruptcy.

Presented by Simon Pitts, the programme examines how best to run modern cities, meets with local residents and the Latino community affected and often disenfranchised by the changes and talks to policy professionals who have deep reservations about contracting the private sector to run a city.
