From active volcanic mountains in the South Pacific to the highest communities in the Himalaya and the wilds of Mongolia, mountains can be the harshest environments on Earth, and they are explored in the latest episode of the landmark natural history series Human Planet.
Weather shifts from tropical to arctic in just a few hours and the higher the altitude, the harder it is to breathe.
In the Mongolian Altai Mountains a remarkable hunting technique is passed on from father to son. Sailau Jadik teaches his son, Berik, to find and capture a baby eagle from the wild. In a spellbinding sequence, they horse ride across the mountains, hunting fox, helped by the now trained eagle.
On a quest for sulphur in Indonesia, brave men enter a live smoking volcano and battle poisonous gas clouds. And, in Nepal, a woman who has been blinded by powerful, high-altitude sunlight has her vision restored by an inspirational surgeon.
In mountainous terrain, it's not just the harsh environment that challenges humans' very existence; they also have to compete with wildlife for scarce resources. Captured on film for the first time, an Ethiopian boy is seen battling to protect his crops from vicious monkeys with teeth larger than a lion's.
In another TV first, Papuan tribesmen reveal a remarkable technique to capture fruit bats flying through the mountains by cutting a "doorway" through the forest.
Even in death, the frozen mountains can present the harshest of challenges. The lack of wood makes the cremation of bodies impractical so the Tibetan sky burial "recycles" the body. Vultures are used to dispose of the corpse in a unique and moving ceremony.
The Behind The Lens diary sequence features the filming of the Mongolian eagle hunters, using eagle-cam – an HD camera mounted on the back of a golden eagle.

Mike is sent into a panic when Gloria calls in sick on the day he has a major presentation with some important clients, as the comedy series set in a personal injury law firm continues. It's not long before things come to a head and Darrel and Mike have a run-in. Darrel is left in a quandary as he's sure Ava is his true love, but he doesn't want to jeopardise his "career".
