‘After coming out, I swapped the priesthood for artisan baking’

5 February 2019

When Harry was a teenager growing up in Poland, his dream was to become a priest — a decision his Catholic parents met with enthusiastic pride.

“It was always my dad’s dream to see me in the church.”

But when Harry realised he was gay, it became clear that the priesthood might not be the ideal environment for him. For a while, he even thought that becoming a priest would “fix” his homosexuality.

Years of struggle followed, during which Harry felt unable to be himself completely. Indeed, it wasn’t until Harry took a holiday to Scotland that his life truly changed.

“Definitely Scotland is my home now”

Harry fell in love with his holiday destination — and never left.

He found work first as a kitchen porter and eventually became a pastry chef. Now, he runs a small bakery in Glasgow’s fashionable West End.

Harry is very fond of the Scottish people.

“They don’t judge you for anything; they take you how you are.”

This was particularly evident when Harry told his colleagues he was gay. Instead of the awkward working environment he might have faced back in Poland, Harry was taken aback at how normally everyone treated his announcement.

And the positive changes didn’t end there.

“I came for a holiday and I’ve been here 12 years. It changed my life: I came out, I’m running a bakery and I met the love of my life.”
