Meet the Characters

Leo Colston

With the benefit of hindsight an older Leo re-examines the events of a formative summer holiday when, as a naive twelve year old, he was thrown into a world of alien social mores and adult concerns at the Maudsley’s country estate. As a fish out of water, gauche and anxious to please, young Leo is unwittingly drawn into a web of deceit as he becomes the conduit for secret communications or ‘the go-between’ in an illicit and passionate affair, the consequences of which have haunted him his whole life.

Young Leo Colston played by Jack Hollington

Having made his professional debut on the stage in Stephen Daldry’s production of An Inspector Calls, school-boy Jack followed up by touring with Mike Bartlett’s Medea, the national tour and West End run of The Full Monty, and with appearances on screen in and Matt Smith’s final episode and Christmas Special of . The Go-Between is Jack’s first leading television role. He will also be seen shortly in the forthcoming ITV production of Beowulf and the feature film Bitter Harvest out later this year.

Older Leo Colston played by Jim Broadbent

Oscar winner Jim Broadbent is one of the UK’s most versatile character actors with a career encompassing, Moulin Rouge, Iris, Gangs of New York, Bridget Jones' Diary, Harry Potter and Life Is Sweet. He’s recently starred on television in Any Human Heart, Longford, and The Great Train Robbery and will be appearing in the 大象传媒’s forthcoming adaptation of Tolstoy’s epic War and Peace.

Marian Maudsley

The beautiful, proud and headstrong Marian captivates young Leo whose fondness she uses for her own ends. She is under pressure from her mother to do her duty and enter into an approved marriage to aristocrat Hugh Trimingham. Her heart lies elsewhere however and her bitter resentment at being used to improve the family’s fortunes provokes a wilful Marian into rebellious transgressions; a dangerous game she plays with not only her own, but other people’s lives.

Young Marian Maudsley played by Joanna Vanderham

Joanna is probably best known to TV audiences for her leading role as Denise Lovett in two series of the 大象传媒 drama . Other credits for television include Stephen Poliakoff’s Dancing on the Edge with Chiwetel Ejiofar, Jimmy McGovern’s Banished and The Young Herriott. Her breakout role was in The Runaway with Jack O’Connell, which earned her an Emmy nomination for Best International Actress. Feature film roles include What Maisie Knew opposite Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgard. In 2011, Joanna was a recipient of the Screen International Star of Tomorrow Award. Joanna is currently shooting the thriller One of Us alongside Juliet Stevenson which will air on the 大象传媒 next year.

Older Marian Maudsley played by Vanessa Redgrave

One of the Grande Dames of British acting, Vanessa Redgrave’s Oscar winning career has spanned film, theatre and television with screen credits including Fox-Catcher, A Song for Marion, Atonement, A Man for All Seasons, Blow Up, and Howard's End. She has most recently appeared on the small screen as Jenny Worth in the 大象传媒’s hit series .

Ted Burgess

Ted is a virile and robust tenant farmer whose gruff exterior and physical prowess belies a sensitive soul, and impresses young Leo. Proud and intelligent, he is socially inferior to Marian with whom he is passionately in love, and he finds himself in a tragic struggle between what the heart wants and society will allow.

Ben Batt

First coming to prominence as Joe Pritchard in Shameless, Ben has been seen variously on the small screen in , , and Scott and Bailey and on the big screen in films such as The Edge of Love and Captain America: The First Avenger. He will be appearing next on the 大象传媒 in forthcoming series From Darkness.

Viscount Hugh Trimingham

A man of integrity and honour aristocrat Hugh Trimingham is none-the-less a product of his class and used to getting his own way. While he appears to be the epitome of English reserve and wounded heroism his flawless manners conceal a ruthless streak. He is recently engaged to Marian, with whom he is very much in love, however a facial disfigurement attained in the Boer War, and and his indefatigable pursuit of his fiancé’s affections makes him repulsive to her and arouses Leo’s sympathy.

Stephen Campbell Moore

Stephen Campbell Moore made his screen debut in Stephen Fry’s Bright Young Things, and has since forged a career on both stage and screen. Amongst his theatre credits are Alan Bennett’s acclaimed The History Boys, Clybourne Park and Olivier award winning Chimerica. His film and television credits include a reprise of his role in The History Boys, , A Short Stay In Switzerland, The Bank Job, The Season of the Witch, Bafta award winning Complicit, The Wrong Mans, and most recently . He will soon be seen on stage in Photograph 51, starring alongside Nicole Kidman, in the new three part comedy series Stag for 大象传媒2, and upcoming features The Ones Below, The Lady in the Van, and Burnt.

Mrs Maudsley

The matriarch of the family, Mrs Maudsley is socially ambitious for her daughter and the arbiter of decorum at Brandham Hall. As Marian’s prideful rejection of her fiancé Hugh increases so too does her watchful mother’s single mindedness, until everything comes to a head one fateful summer’s afternoon.

Lesley Manville

One of the UK’s most acclaimed and prolific stage actresses, winning the 2014 Olivier Best Actress Award for her performance in Ghosts, Lesley Manville is however perhaps best known for her collaborations with director Mike Leigh in films such as Mr. Turner, All or Nothing, Secrets and Lies, Topsy-Turvy and of course for her multi-award winning performance in Another Year. Her television credits include North and South, , Bodily Harm and Other People's Children with the 大象传媒 series River and Mum to be screened later this year.
