Radio 3 Christmas Carol Competition 2021

It's time to vote

Back in September, Radio 3 challenged listeners to come up with a cracking new tune to the words of Christina Rossetti's Love Came Down At Christmas. Our judges were overwhelmed by the response! Hundreds of aspiring composers sent us their melodies, in all sorts of musical styles.

The competition was judged blind by our expert panel, who whittled almost a thousand entries down to a shortlist of just six. Our six finalists have since been working with an arranger, Ken Burton, to come up with festive harmonies and an accompaniment for their tunes.

Please listen to each of the six shortlisted carols on the voting page, before casting your vote there.

The vote closes on Tuesday 21st December at 6pm. The winner will be announced during Radio 3’s Breakfast show on Wednesday 22nd December.

Meet the Judges of the 2021 Carol Competition

Things to note

  • The final deadline for submissions was 11.59pm on Tuesday 2 November 2021.

  • The Radio 3 Carol Competition 2021 was open to non-professional composers in the UK. Anyone could enter, no matter what their level of experience. You didn’t need to have had any special musical training or need to know how to read or write music.

  • This year entrants could submit either a written score or a voice recording. If you submitted a recording, please bear in mind that the only people who heard it were our producers.

  • We asked entrants to compose a tune for the voice. The tune had to be the same for every verse, so entrants only needed to submit one verse. If you submitted a carol with harmonies and/or accompaniments, or with different tunes for different verses, these elements will not be taken into consideration by the judges.

Love Came Down at Christmas by Christina Rossetti

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, love divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,
Love be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.
