The famous pop stars singing the praises of Robert Burns

On – is an opportunity for a whole new generation of fans to learn about the Scottish poet’s work.

Scottish pop legend Eddi Reader visited High Park Primary School to be interviewed – as part of The L.A.B – by pupils wanting to find out more about her love for the Scottish Bard.

Eddi explained that she was a big fan of Burns’ humour and of how his work provided a snapshot of the time it was written. She also admitted to needing a Scots dictionary early in her career to decipher some of the language used in the songs she was singing.

What would she would say to Burns if it were possible for her to meet him? Eddi said she’d invite him to the school and show him how his legacy has lived on, years after his death.

  • Famous fans of Robert Burns include and Bob Dylan, who said Burns’ work was one of his greatest inspirations.
  • Works by Burns influenced some of the other literary greats: Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger references the Burns song Comin’ Thro’ the Rye; John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men is named after a line in the poem To a Mouse.
  • Other than Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus, Robert Burns has around the world than any other non-religious figure.
