The UK football strip you need to be 鈥榩retty brave鈥 to wear
25 July 2019
“We’re nothing special; we lose every week”, a Fort William F.C. fan joke-chants about his team — but it’s not far from the truth.
Playing in the shadow of Britain’s highest mountain in the Scottish Highlands, Fort William’s football team has been dubbed ’the worst in Britain’. In a new documentary, The Fort, they are described as “below rock bottom”.
Fort William FC鈥檚 fight for survival
The football club鈥檚 struggles make it hard to attract players.
鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to be pretty brave to put on a Fort William shirt.鈥
They may play on one of the most iconic football grounds in Britain, but Fort William sit bottom of the table in the fifth tier of Scottish football. One of their difficulties is resourcing players: there’s another, bigger sport in town.
“The battle between shinty and football is... it’s hard.
“Right now it might not be that appealing to play for us because of the struggle and the reputation we’ve got.
“You’ve got to be pretty brave to put on a Fort William shirt.”
