‘I believe that my choosing not to have children is a selfless act’
23 July 2019
Environmentalist Anna has elected not to have children. Her reason: to avoid swelling a global population expected to reach 9.8 billion by 2050.
Her decision has led some people to describe her as selfish.
“I guess the implication is that I only think of myself and that I’m the most important person in my life... That doesn’t mean I’m selfish. In fact, I’m being selfless.”
35-year-old Anna tries to live as sustainable a life as possible. And it’s this lifestyle that informed her choice not to have children.
“It’s inescapable that having kids in the first place creates a resource-consuming person.”
