A calculating femme fatale is at the centre of this melodrama about adult relationships. Arriving in San Francisco, she embarks on two affairs - with a wealthy businessman and a brooding novelist. Affection is not her strong suit, ambition and vanity are, but the film was ahead of its time in avoiding a simplistic happy ending involving her being reformed.
