John McNeillie's Wigtown Ploughman was more fact than fiction, depicting the life of a young farm worker. It caused a scandal, not just for the candid sexual scenes, but because it had aired the area's dirty linen.

Seventy years on, the book - and John McNeillie - are given a fair appraisal.
