A pregnant teenage girl and her feckless mother trade insults and repartee in 1950s Salford.

One of the great stage plays of the 20th century. It鈥檚 a powerful story of a teenage pregnancy set in a backdrop of post-war austerity, discrimination and homophobia.

Writer Shelagh Delaney was just 19 years-old when she wrote this, her debut novel.

It was soon adapted for stage and debuted in London at Joan Littlewood鈥檚 Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1958, before becoming an award-winning film in 1961.
