Highlights from the Free Thinking festival 2008

Matthew Sweet presents highlights from the 2008 Free Thinking festival, including Paul Preston's views on Britain's sense of historical superiority and Mark Haddon's new book.

Matthew Sweet presents more highlights from the 2008 Free Thinking festival in Liverpool, including a talk by noted historian Paul Preston. Preston argues that Britain's sense of historical superiority has encouraged a misguided Euroscepticism. He traces the differences between the attitudes of Spain, Germany, France, Italy and the UK towards Europe, and their links to each country's view of its own national history.

Plus highlights from writer Mark Haddon's discussion of his latest work, recorded in front of an audience at 大象传媒 Radio Merseyside. In an event hosted by The Reader magazine, the award-winning author, best known for his book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, takes questions and reads from his new, as yet unpublished, novel.
