An Litir Bheag 193
Tha sinn a鈥 toirt s霉il air na d霉in air Balla Antonine. An t-seachd-ain sa chaidh, thug sinn s霉il air a鈥 chiad dh脿. B鈥 iad sin D霉n Chill Ph脿draig agus D霉n T貌chair 鈥 d脿 dh霉n le ainmean G脿idhlig. R脿inig sinn an treas d霉n 鈥 Cleddans Fortlet.
Tha cuid ag r脿dh gur e Cleddans ainm G脿idhlig. Tha e a鈥 tighinn bhon fhacal cladhan. Tha sin a鈥 ciallachadh channel no ditch. Gu sear air Claddens tha Castlehill Fort. An uair sin Bearsden Fort. Tha tobhta an taigh-ionnlaid an sin fhathast.
Tha an t-ainm Bearsden annasach. Ann an G脿idhlig 鈥檚 e Cill Ph脿draig 脵r a tha air. Agus 鈥檚 e New Kirk a bha air an sg矛re ann am Beurla. Ach chaidh rathad-iarainn agus st猫is-ean a thogail ann an ochd ceud deug, seasgad 鈥檚 a tr矛 (1863). Agus chaidh an st猫isean ainmeachadh mar Bearsden Station. Tha cuid ag r脿dh gum b鈥 e Bearsden ainm taigh a bha faisg air an st猫isean.
Ma leanas sinn oirnn air Balla Antonine, ruigidh sinn Balmuildy Fort. Tha sin ri taobh Abhainn Chealbhainn. Bha an d霉n sin m貌r.
鈥橲 e an t-ath dh霉n 鈥 Cadder Fort. 鈥橲 ann 脿 canan nam Breatannach 鈥 seann Chuimris 鈥 a th脿inig Cadder. Tha e a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渄霉n鈥. 脌s d猫idh sin, ruigidh sinn Kirkintilloch no Cathair Cheann Tulaich. Tha an t-ainm sin a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渇ort at the end of the hill鈥.
Gu sear air sin tha Auchendavy Fort. Tha Auchendavy a鈥 coimhead coltach ri ainm G脿idhlig. Fhuair sinn ainm fear de na saighdearan a bha a鈥 fuireach anns an d霉n sin. B鈥 esan Marcus Cocceius Firmus. 鈥橲 e centurion a bha ann. Rugadh e ann an taobh sear na Roinn E貌rpa.
Tha Bar Hill Fort a鈥 tighinn an uair sin, agus Croy Hill Fort. Tha mi an d霉il gu bheil Bar ann am Bar Hill a鈥 tighinn bhon Gh脿idhlig 产脿谤谤 鈥 鈥渢he uppermost part鈥. Tha na tobhtaichean ann fhathast 鈥 agus seann tobar R貌manach.
鈥橲 d貌cha gu bheil Croy a鈥 tighinn bhon Gh脿idhlig cruaidh. 鈥橲 e seo an aon ph矛os de Bhalla Antonine far nach robh d矛g ann. Carson nach robh d矛g ann? Bha a鈥 chlach ro chruaidh airson d矛g a chladhach. Cruaidh dha-r矛ribh.The Little Letter 193
We鈥檙e looking at the forts on the Antonine Wall. Last week, we looked at the first two. They were Old Kilpatrick and Duntocher 鈥 two forts with Gaelic names. We reached the third fort 鈥 Cleddans Fortlet.
听听听听听听听 Some people say Cleddans is a Gaelic name. It comes from the word cladhan. That means a channel or a ditch. East of Claddens there is Castlehill Fort. Then Bearsden Fort. The ruin of the bath-house is still there.
听听听听听听听 The name Bearsden is unusual. In Gaelic it鈥檚 called Cill Ph脿draig 脵r [New Kilpatrick]. And it鈥檚 New Kirk that the area was called in English. But a railway line and station were built in 1863. And the station was called Bears-den Station. Some people say that Bearsden was the name of a house near the station.

听听听听听听听 If we continue on the Anton-ine Wall, we reach Balmuildy Fort. That鈥檚 next to the River Kel-vin. That fort was big.
听听听听听听听 The next fort is Cadder Fort. It is from the British language 鈥 old Welsh 鈥 that Cadder came. It means 鈥渇ort鈥. After that we reach Kirkintilloch. That name means the 鈥渇ort at the end of the hill鈥.
听听听听听听听 East of that is Auchendavy Fort. Auchendavy looks like a Gaelic name. We obtained the name of one of the soldiers that was living in that fort. He was Marcus Cocceius Firmus. He was a centurion. He was born in eastern Europe.
听听听听听听听 Bar Hill Fort comes next, and Croy Hill Fort. I reckon Bar in Bar Hill comes from the Gaelic 产脿谤谤 鈥 鈥渢he uppermost part鈥. The ruins are still there 鈥 and an old Roman well.
听听听听听听听 Perhaps Croy comes from the Gaelic cruaidh [鈥渉ard鈥漖. This is the one piece of the Antonine Wall where there was not a ditch. Why was there not a ditch? The stone was too hard to dig a ditch. Hard, indeed.Broadcast
