Changing Attitudes

The programme looks at Islamophobia and prejudice against asylum seekers and refugees, and offers suggestions on how racism can be challenged.

Aimed at 11- to 16-year-olds, the programme looks at the 'racisms' that are at the forefront of 'race' today and is designed to stimulate discussion. The programme looks at issues of identity and examines what racism is and how it manifests itself. Other issues explored are Islamophobia and the myths and stereotypes that have grown up around asylum seekers and refugees. Institutional racism is also examined by using football as an example. The final section explores why people are racist and offers suggestions on how racism can be challenged by looking at a group of young people in Burnley who got together to tackle racism after the riots of 2001.

The programme is broken down into six easily identifiable sections, making it easier for teachers to navigate and to use either in a modular way or to select the ones most pertinent to their lesson. By using interviews with young people, interspersed with expert comment, the programme is designed to stimulate classroom discussion and to challenge existing views young people might have, by presenting them with solid facts. The programme does not provide answers or easy remedies but aims to get young people to think through the issues and help them articulate reasoned arguments.

Winner of the CRE Race in the Media Award, 2005.
