An Litir Bheag 215

Th脿inig leabhar beag a-mach o chionn聽goirid. Tha e a鈥 toirt fiosrachadh mu聽dhualchainnt air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd. Tha聽d矛reach dithis aig a bheil an dual-chainnt聽an-diugh. Chan e dualchainnt na聽G脿idhlig a tha innte, ge-t脿, ach dual-chainnt聽na h-Albais.聽鈥橲 e 鈥淒ualchainnt Iasgairean聽Chrombaidh鈥 a chanas daoine ris a鈥櫬燾hainnt sin. Is iad an dithis a tha fileanta聽na br脿ithrean Bobby agus Gordon Hogg.聽Tha iad a鈥 fuireach ann an Cromba. Tha聽an sinnsireachd ann an Cromba a鈥 dol air聽ais cho fada ri sia ceud deug, naochad 鈥檚聽a h-ochd (1698).聽Bha tr矛 dualchainntean eadar-dhealaichte聽de dh鈥橝lbais ann an sg矛re聽Chrombaidh. B鈥 iad sin dualchainnt nan聽iasgairean, dualchainnt muinntir a鈥櫬燽haile agus dualchainnt nan tuathanach.聽Bhuineadh na tuathanaich don Gh脿idhealtachd.聽Bha G脿idhlig aca no bha聽G脿idhlig aig an sinnsirean. Bhuineadh聽muinntir a鈥 bhaile don Gh脿idhealtachd聽agus do Mhoireibh. Bha iadsan an s脿s聽ann am malairt no bha iad ag obair aig聽muir. Bha cainnt eadar-dhealaichte聽acasan bho na tuathanaich is na h-iasgairean.聽Ach 鈥檚 e cainnt nan iasgairean a聽tha fhathast be貌 an-diugh 鈥 air 猫iginn.聽C貌 脿s a th脿inig sinnsirean nan聽iasgairean? Chan eil fios le cinnt. A r猫ir聽beul-aithris, th脿inig iad 脿 Linne Foirthe.聽Bha sin nuair a bha Seumas IV na r矛gh 鈥撀燼ig deireadh a鈥 ch貌igeamh no toiseach聽an t-siathamh linn deug.聽Ciamar a tha dualchainnt nan聽iasgairean eadar-dhealaichte bho dhual-chainntean聽eile? Uill, gu tric, bidh iad a鈥櫬燾ur 鈥渉鈥 ann, no ga f脿gail 脿s, an aghaidh聽chleachdaidhean 鈥溍燽haisteach鈥. Canaidh聽iad 鈥渙os鈥 airson hoose agus 鈥渁m鈥 airson聽ham. Canaidh iad 鈥渉aypel鈥 airson apple聽agus 鈥渉eggs鈥 airson eggs.Airson Ciamar a tha thu?,聽canaidh iad Oo thee keepan? Tha iad a鈥櫬燾leachdadh fhaclan sean-fhasanta mar聽thou, thee agus thy. Tha iad ag r脿dh gur聽e sin buaidh a鈥 Bh矛obaill. Bha iad gu聽math cr脿bhach.聽Bha iad air an cuairteachadh leis a鈥櫬燝h脿idhlig. Mar sin, a bheil faclan aca a聽th脿inig bhon Gh脿idhlig? Bheir sinn s霉il聽air sin an ath-sheachdain.

The Little Letter 215

A little book came out recently. It聽gives information about a dialect聽in the Highlands. There are only聽two people who speak the dialect聽today. It is not a Gaelic dialect,聽however, but a Scots dialect.聽It鈥檚 the 鈥淐romarty Fisherfolk聽Dialect鈥 that people call this聽speech. The two who are fluent are聽the brothers Bobby and Gordon聽Hogg. They live in Cromarty.聽Their ancestry in Cromarty goes聽back as far as 1698.聽There were three different聽dialects of Scots in the Cromarty聽area. Those were the fisherfolk聽dialect, the townsfolk dialect and聽belonged to the Highlands. They聽or their ancestors spoke Gaelic.聽The townsfolk belonged to the聽Highlands and Moray. They were聽involved in trade or worked at sea.聽They spoke a different dialect from聽the farmers and fishermen. But it鈥檚聽the fisherfolk dialect that is still聽alive today 鈥 only just [however].聽Where did the fisherfolk鈥檚聽ancestors come from? It is not聽known for certain. According to聽tradition, they came from the Firth聽of Forth. That was when Seumas聽IV was king 鈥 at the end of the聽15th or the start of the 16th聽Century.聽How is the fisherfolk dialect聽different from other dialects? Well,聽often, they put an 鈥渉鈥 in, or leave聽it out, in contradistinction to聽鈥渟tandard鈥 usage[s]. They say聽鈥渙os鈥 for hoose and 鈥渁m鈥 for ham.聽They say 鈥渉aypel鈥 for apple and聽鈥渉eggs鈥 for eggs.聽For How are you?, they say聽Oo thee keepan? They use old-fashioned聽words like thou, thee聽and thy. They say that鈥檚 the聽influence of the Bible. They were聽very religious.聽They were surrounded by聽Gaelic. Thus, do they have words聽that came from Gaelic? We鈥檒l look聽at that next week聽
