The Little Letter 216
A wee book came out recently 鈥 The聽Cromarty Fisherfolk Dialect. It鈥檚聽about the fisherfolk dialect in聽Cromarty. That dialect is a dialect聽of Scots. Only two people speak it聽fluently today.聽Some of the words are like聽words in other dialects of Scots. For聽example bauchles (old slippers),聽belligut (a greedy person) and聽guloot (a simple man 鈥 one who is a聽groat short of the shilling). And they聽have words which are not in other聽dialects, such as sallikatazaar which聽means 鈥渁 skelp鈥.聽But Cromarty was surrounded聽by Gaels. And there are words in the聽fisher dialect that came from Gaelic.聽For example amitan (a fool),聽boddach (old man), buss (a mouth),聽callach (old woman) and cootyach聽(family group, company or clan).聽You will recognize the words聽amadan, bodach, bus, cailleach and聽cuideachd.聽Here are some others:聽doorcans (fir cones used to smoke聽fish), dossan (fringe, forelock), gob聽(the opening or mouth of a receptacle),聽laroch (a house site), ropach聽(untidy), and spatyel (grand or welldressed).聽You鈥檒l recognize the聽Gaelic words durcan, dosan, gob,聽l脿rach, robach and spaideal.聽The word they had for聽themselves was Croompach 鈥 that鈥檚聽somebody from Cromarty. That聽came from the Gaelic Crombach.聽And they called people from聽Dingwall Ballachalls. Baile a鈥 Ch脿il聽(鈥渃abbage town鈥) was an old聽Gaelic name for Dingwall.聽There was an old well in Cromarty.聽It was called The Stroopie聽Well. The water was a cure for many聽things. Young children took [were聽taking] the water home. The聽children got a reward 鈥 a wee聽bannock with a hole in it. In Gaelic聽it was called a bonnach fallaid.聽Fallaid is the meal and dough which聽was not used. In the Cromarty聽fisherfolk dialect they called that聽bannock the bonnach faaly.聽The people were believing that聽the bonnach fallaid brought the聽house good luck. The Gaels were聽believing that. The Cromarty fisherfolk聽were believing that. They spoke聽different languages, but they had聽much in common.
