Claire Martin talks to saxophonist and composer Tommy Smith about his re-working of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which has been re-arranged for his Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, assembled for this recording. It was written to feature leading Scottish pianist Brian Kellock, who played the original Gershwin piece as a music student in Edinburgh in 1981. Familiar themes, including the iconic clarinet glissando and Gershwin's heart-breaking nostalgic refrain, have been used.
