Glen Golly, Glen Golly,聽Glen Golly of the trees聽Who could see it and not praise it,聽Glen Golly of the trees聽That鈥檚 the refrain of a famous聽poem/song. Glen Golly is in the聽Mackay Country. That鈥檚 in the north聽of the Highlands. And who is the聽poet? Well, none other than Rob聽Donn 鈥� a very famous poet.聽Rob was born in Allt na聽Caillich, early in the Eighteenth聽Century. Allt na Caillich is south of聽Ben Hope. It鈥檚 close to Glen Golly.聽But Rob was buried in Balnakeil聽Cemetery. That鈥檚 in Durness, on the聽shore.聽Up the road from the cemetery,聽there is a bookshop. I was on a trip聽in the area last year. I went to look聽at the cemetery. I saw Rob Donn鈥檚聽gravestone memorial. Then I went聽up the road. I saw the book The聽World of Rob Donn by Ian Grimble聽on a shelf. I was wanting to buy the聽book.聽I put the book on the counter.聽鈥淚鈥檓 pleased to get this book,鈥� I聽said to the woman who was behind聽the counter. She didn鈥檛 say anything.聽鈥淧articularly in this area,鈥� I said.聽鈥淚t鈥檚 just fitting.鈥澛燭he woman picked up the book.聽She read the title 鈥� The World of聽Rob Donn. 鈥淩ob Don 鈥� who was he聽then?鈥� she said. What could I say?聽鈥淥nly the most famous person聽ever to come out of here,鈥� I said...聽Fortunately, the children in聽Tongue Primary School are more聽familiar with Rob Donn. Many of the聽pupils are in the Gaelic Medium聽unit. And the others learn a bit of聽Gaelic. Roddy MacLeod helps them聽with the Gaelic. I mentioned聽[named] Roddy in the Litir last聽week. He was at one time a聽fisherman in Kylesku.聽I was in the Mackay Country in聽the spring of this year. Roddy gave聽me an invitation to go and watch the聽pupils.
