Gleanna Gollaidh, Gleanna Gollaidh,聽Gleanna Gollaidh nan craobh,聽C貌 a ch矛 e nach mol e,聽Gleanna Gollaidh nan craobh.聽Bidh cuimhne agaibh air an聽rainn sin bhon t-seachdain sa chaidh.聽Bha mi ag innse dhuibh mun bh脿rd聽ainmeil 脿 D霉thaich MhicAoidh 鈥 Rob聽Donn. Bha e a鈥 fuireach fad 霉ine anns聽an t-Srath Mh貌r, deas air Loch H貌b.聽Bha e be貌 anns an ochdamh linn deug.聽Cha robh na cinn-chinnidh ro聽thoilichte le Rob. Ann am Bliadhna a鈥櫬燩hrionnsa, bha cinn-chinnidh Clann 鈥檌c聽Aoidh taiceil do na Hanobh猫irianaich.聽Ach bha Rob taiceil do na Seumasaich.聽Seo rann a sgr矛obh e:聽Nis, a The脿rlaich 脪ig Sti霉bhairt,聽Riut tha d霉il aig gach fine聽Chaidh a chothachadh cr霉in dhut聽鈥橲 a leig an d霉thaich na teine; An uair sin tha e a鈥 samhlachadh聽nam fineachan mar nathraichean.聽Tha iad mar nathraichean falaicht鈥櫬燗 chaill an earradh an-uiridh聽Ach tha 鈥檊 ath-ghleusadh an gathan聽Gu 猫irigh latha do thighinn.聽A bharrachd air sin, bha na聽h-uachdarain a鈥 cur stad air daoine bho聽bhith a鈥 sealg nam fiadh. Bha Rob聽Donn nan aghaidh. Bha esan dhen聽dhualchas nan G脿idheal a bhith a鈥櫬爏ealg nam fiadh. Seo p矛os beag a聽sgr矛obh e mu a bhr脿thair, D貌mhnall:聽Bha fuil am broilleach do l猫ine,聽鈥橲 cha b鈥 e fuil na gaibhre c猫ire聽Ach fuil an fh猫idh a bha san d脿mhair,聽鈥橲 cha bu mh猫irleach D貌mhnallan聽Dubh.聽Hogaidh h貌, mo Dh貌mhnallan Dubh,聽Sealgair s矛thne, D貌mhnallan Dubh,聽鈥橲 fear neo-bhruidhneach, D貌mhnallan聽Dubh,聽鈥橲 gheibh e an n矛 a chionn a bhith聽ruith.聽Tha cuid a鈥 smaoineachadh gum聽b鈥 fheudar do Rob gluasad a-mach 脿s聽an t-Srath Mh貌r. Bha e an uair sin a鈥櫬爁uireach air a鈥 chladach. Agus cha robh聽e idir faisg air Gleanna Gollaidh. 鈥橲聽d貌cha gur ann an uair sin a sgr矛obh e聽an d脿n Gleanna Gollaidh:聽Ri faicinn cr矛och 脿rdain聽Ga mo bhreugadh gu taobh,聽鈥橲 ann a smuainich mi fanadh聽An Gleanna Gollaidh nan craobh.聽Gleanna Gollaidh, Gleanna Gollaidh,聽Gleanna Gollaidh nan craobh,聽C貌 a ch矛 e nach mol e,聽Gleanna Gollaidh nan craobh.

The Little Letter 232

Glen Golly, Glen Golly,聽Glen Golly of the trees聽Who could see it and not praise it,聽Glen Golly of the trees聽You鈥檒l remember that verse from聽last week. I was telling you about the聽famous poet from the Mackay Country 鈥撀燫ob Donn (鈥渂rown-haired Rob鈥). He聽was living for a time in Strath More,聽south of Loch Hope. He was alive in the聽Eighteenth Century.聽The clan chiefs weren鈥檛 too pleased聽with Rob. In the Year of the Prince聽(1745-6), the chiefs of the Mackays聽were supportive of the Hanoverians.聽But Rob was supportive of the聽Jacobites. Here鈥檚 a verse he wrote:聽Now, young Charles Stewart聽Every clan places its hope in you聽That sought to crown you聽And set the country alight;聽Then he represents the clans as聽snakes.聽They鈥檙e like hidden snakes聽Which cast their skins last year聽But are making ready their fangs聽To arise on the day of your coming.聽Not only that, but the chiefs were聽stopping people from hunting the deer.聽Rob Donn was against them. He was of聽the opinion that it was part of the聽Gaels鈥 heritage to be hunting the deer.聽Here鈥檚 a wee piece he wrote about his聽brother, Donald:聽There was blood on the front of your聽shirt,聽And it wasn鈥檛 the blood of the dark goat聽But the blood of the deer in the rut聽And he was no robber, black-haired wee聽Donald.聽Hogaidh h貌, my Donald Dubh聽Hunter of venison, Donald Dubh,聽Not a talkative man, Donald Dubh聽And he鈥檒l have a reward for the chase.聽Some people think that Rob had to聽move out of Strath More. Then he was聽then living on the shore. And he wasn鈥檛聽at all near Glen Golly. Perhaps it is聽then that he wrote the poem Gleanna聽Gollaidh:聽The view of the frontier heights聽Is enticing me yonder聽And I thought I would stay聽In Glen Golly of the trees.聽Glen Golly, Glen Golly,聽Glen Golly of the trees聽Who could see it and not praise it,聽Glen Golly of the trees.聽
