The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Documentary exploring the stories behind the foundation of the Royal Horticultural Society and asking where gardening is heading today.
In 1804 a disparate group of seven gentlemen, all forceful personalities, met for the first time above a bookshop in Piccadilly. They included a domineering aristocrat, a womanising MP and a money-grabbing toy boy. Amazingly though, they also all had a deep love of gardening and plants - and this meeting was in fact the inaugural session of what is now the highly respected Royal Horticultural Society.
Narrated by keen gardener Sandi Toksvig, this documentary explores the stories behind the seven founders, their feuds and their quarrels. It then zooms forward to investigate where gardening is heading today, through the eyes of seven modern key horticulturists hoping to ensure the successful future of the RHS.
