The Songwriters' Great British Songbook

On Radio 2's Great British Songbook Day, Richard Allinson showcases the song choices of some of Britain's finest songwriters and discovers what inspires them to write hit songs.

As part of Radio 2's Great British Songbook Day, Richard Allinson invites a host of Britain's finest songwriters to choose their favourite song penned by a Brit and talk about one of their own hits, and what inspired them to write it. Richard hears from songwriters including Roger Greenaway (You've Got Your Troubles, Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart), Geoff Stephens (The Crying Game), Tony Hatch (Downtown), Les Reed (It's Not Unusual, The Last Waltz) and Jamie Hartman (All Time Love, Let Me Out).

Radio 2's Great British Songbook is celebrating the work of our finest British songwriters by creating a landmark collection of their very best songs - as chosen by listeners, presenters, artists and songwriters. As part of this, on Radio 2's Great British Songbook Day, we're showcasing the talent of our best songwriters with classic songs written by Brits and special guests. These include lyricist Sir Tim Rice and guitarist Albert Lee, in conversation with Simon Mayo on Drivetime; while The Hollies' Bobby Elliott is sharing his Tracks Of My Years with Ken Bruce.

Through Radio 2's Great British Songbook, we hope our listeners will be inspired by British popular song and discover more about the songs which define, and inspire us, as a nation. You can watch online videos of artists performing their versions of Great British songs; discover some of the Radio 2 presenters' favourites; and learn more about the work that goes into crafting hit records, with songwriters Roger Greenaway and Don Black.
