Litir 571: Sandaidh D貌mhnallach

Bha Sandaidh D貌mhnallach na gheamair air oighreachd an Dail Mh貌ir anns a鈥 Mhonadh Ruadh tr脿th san fhicheadamh linn. Sin an oighreachd ris an canar Mar Lodge ann am Beurla. Bha far-ainm aig Sandaidh 鈥 am Brogach. Th脿inig e gu 矛re 鈥 cha robh e na bhrogach tuilleadh 鈥 agus bha e fhathast gun a鈥 mhuir fhaicinn. Latha a bha seo, choisich e tron L脿irig Ghr霉 鈥 astar m貌r a th鈥 ann 鈥 gu ruige an Aghaidh Mh貌r airson a dhol air an tr猫ana. Bha e a鈥 falbh a dh鈥橧nbhir Nis. Carson? Airson a鈥 mhuir fhaicinn! Thathar ag r脿dh nach do shaoil e cus dhith!

Thathar ag aithris gun do lorg Sandaidh rudeigin anns a鈥 mhonadh goirid 脿s d猫idh don Chogadh Mh貌r a thighinn gu ceann. Bha e dhen bheachd gur e a boma a bh鈥 ann 鈥 co-cheangailte ris a鈥 chogadh ann an d貌igh air choreigin. Thug e an rud dhachaigh leis. Latha a bha seo uaireigin 脿s d猫idh sin, bha Sandaidh a鈥 sealg anns a鈥 mhonadh cuide ri Prionnsa na Cuimrigh agus sheall e am 鈥渂oma鈥 don phrionnsa. Thug am prionnsa leis e, agus chuir e e gu Ministreachd an Adhair. Dh鈥檃ithnich iadsan an rud sa bhad. Chan e boma a bh鈥 ann ach lasair-bhoillsg no flare.

Cha robh fios aig muinntir na Ministreachd an toiseach c貌 脿s a th脿inig an lasair-bhoillsg. Bha e Gearmailteach, ceart gu le貌r, ach cuimhnichibh gu bheil sinn a鈥 bruidhinn air a鈥 Chiad Chogadh an seo. Cha robh an Luftwaffe a鈥 toirt ionnsaigh air Alba mar a bha anns an D脿rna Cogadh. Ach bha cuimhne aig muinntir a鈥 Mhonaidh Ruaidh air itealan Gearmailteach a bh鈥 air a bhith air sg猫ith os an cionn anns a鈥 Ch猫itean naoi ceud deug is sia-deug (1916). Chan e pl猫ana a bh鈥 ann ach b脿t鈥-adhair dhen t-se貌rsa ris an canar Zeppelin.

Cha b鈥 e sin a鈥 chiad turas a bha Zeppelin L20 air a bhith os cionn Bhreatainn. Aig deireadh an Fhaoillich naoi ceud deug is sia-deug, bha i air seachd bomaichean fichead a leigeil air Burton-on-Trent ann an Sasainn.

Aig toiseach a鈥 Ch猫itein bha i air ais os cionn Bhreatainn. An turas seo bha i a鈥 d猫anamh air Alba. Bha i ag amas air an drochaid-r猫ile thar Linne Foirthe a sgrios. Ach bha droch sh矛de ann. Chaill i Linne Foirthe agus lean i oirre gu tuath. Chuala daoine ann am baile beag Inbhir Eidh i ann am meadhan na h-oidhche. Bha solas air ann am fear de na taighean. Bha an t-eagal air muinntir an 脿ite gun robh na Gearmailtich a鈥 dol a leigeil boma air a鈥 bhaile. Ach bha iad ag amas air targaid na bu mhotha na Inbhir Eidh! Lean am b脿t鈥-adhair oirre thairis air Beinn MacDuibh, thairis air a鈥 Mhonadh Liath agus mu dheireadh thairis air Linne Mhoireibh.

Bha Zeppelin L20 a-nise gann de chonnadh. Bha an caiptean, Kapit盲nleutnant Stabbert, ag iarraidh a thilleadh don Ghearmailt no a laighe sa mhuir gu siar air an Danmhairg. Ach cha robh connadh gu le貌r aige airson sin. Mar sin, rinn i air Nirribhidh. Ach bha tubaist aice ann an Nirribhidh agus chaidh an t-itealan a sgrios. Chuireadh an criutha don phr矛osan mar phr矛osanaich-chogaidh. Cha chuireadh Zeppelin L20 dragh air muinntir a鈥 Mhonaidh Ruaidh 鈥 no duine sam bith eile 鈥 tuilleadh.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

cha robh e na bhrogach tuilleadh: he was no longer a lad. You will know the words balach and gille for 鈥渂oy, lad鈥 鈥 both of which are used throughout Gaelic Scotland. But there are several other words (including brogach) that mean the same thing or a particular type of boy with regard to body shape or nature; some are favoured more in particular dialects. Here鈥檚 a list 鈥 see how many of them you might have heard: balachan, cnapach, giullan, plocach, ponach, proitseach, boiceanach, stobanach, gatachan, geamhta, pr脿banach, lodragan, ploicean, luran, robairneach, ple貌isgean, goileach, cn脿imheach, broganach, maothran. And how would you address a lad in Gaelic? You might say 鈥溾赌檌濒濒别鈥 (short for 鈥渁 ghille鈥) or 鈥渁 bhalaich鈥 but here鈥檚 another nice one 鈥 鈥a laochain鈥. Laochan is 鈥渓ittle hero鈥 but it鈥檚 often used by an adult in the vocative when speaking to a boy. Sin thu fh猫in a laochain! (well done, lad!)

Gnathas-cainnt na Litreach
