Litir 576: Am facal Seachd

Bha mi a鈥 bruidhinn an t-seachdain sa chaidh mu Sheachd Cadalaichean an t-Saoghail no The Seven Sleepers of the Earth 鈥 creutairean a bhathar a鈥 smaoineachadh a chuireadh seachad an geamhradh ann an Alba, seach a bhith a鈥 falbh a dh霉thaich ch猫in. Tha fhios gun robh G脿idheil na h-Alba e貌lach orra ach cha d鈥 fhuair mi liosta dhiubh ann an G脿idhlig. Ge-t脿, fhuair ann an c脿nan a tha gu math dl霉th ris an t猫 againn fh猫in 鈥 Gaelg no G脿idhlig Eilean Mhanainn. Ach, mar a ch矛 sibh, tha barrachd na seachd ann oir, ged a bha daoine ag aontachadh nach robh ann ach seachd, cha robh iad ag aontachadh d猫 bh鈥 annta!

听听听听听听听听听听听 Seo na Seachd Cadalaichean ann am beul-aithris Mhanainneach (ged a tha mi a鈥 cur ainmean Albannach orra): an ialtag, a鈥 chuthag, an clacharan, an gobhlan-gaoithe, an t-seilcheag, an dallag, an dealan-d猫, an seillean agus an dearc-luachrach. Tha mi an d貌chas gun do thuig sibh na h-ainmean sin uile: an ialtag (no bat), a鈥 chuthag (no cuckoo), an clacharan (no stonechat), an gobhlan-gaoithe (no swallow), an t-seilcheag (no snail), an dallag (no dormouse), an dealan-d猫 (no butterfly), an seillean (no bee) agus an dearc-luachrach (no lizard).

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥橲 e sin liosta gu math inntinneach, nach e 鈥 ged a tha eagal orm gun robh na seann daoine ce脿rr mun chuthaig, clacharan is gobhlan-gaoithe. Bidh iadsan a鈥 falbh air sg猫ith don leth-chruinne mu dheas anns a鈥 gheamhradh. Th猫id iad 脿 fianais ach cha t猫id iad a chadal. Agus tha cearcall-beatha aig an dealan-d猫 a tha a鈥 f脿gail nach bi a leithid a鈥 nochdadh anns a鈥 gheamhradh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ann an c脿nanan E貌rpach eile, thathar a鈥 d猫anamh ceangal eadar an 脿ireamh seachd agus cadal. Mar eisimpleir ann an Suaineis tha sjusovare (鈥渟eachd-cadalaiche鈥) a鈥 ciallachadh cuideigin a tha a鈥 faighinn cadal trom airson 霉ine ro mh貌r. Tha faclan coltach ri sin ann an Gearmailtis is Ungairis cuideachd. Thathar a鈥 smaoineachadh gun t脿inig sin bhon traidisean Chr矛osdail co-cheangailte ri Seachd Cadalaichean Ephesus a dh鈥檃inmich mi an t-seachdain sa chaidh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Mus fh脿g mi an 脿ireamh seachd, an cuala sibh riamh an abairt S矛de nan Seachd Sian? Tha sin a鈥 ciallachadh s矛de no aimsir a tha f矛or dhona. Nise, tha am facal sian a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥渟toirm鈥. Ach chan eil mi an d霉il gu bheil an abairt seo a鈥 ciallachadh the weather of the seven storms. Tha sian cuideachd a鈥 ciallachadh element. Tha mi an d霉il gu bheil S矛de nan Seachd Sian a鈥 ciallachadh the weather of the seven elements 鈥 a h-uile se貌rsa aimsir a dh鈥檉haodadh a bhith ann, c貌mhla.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ach d猫 tha anns na seachd siantan no d猫 bh鈥 annta anns an t-seann aimsir? Uill, a r猫ir Dwelly, seo iad: teine, 猫adhar, talamh, uisge, deigh, gaoth agus dealanaich. Teine, 猫adhar, talamh, uisge, deigh, gaoth agus dealanaich. Na seachd siantan, co-dhi霉 ann am beachd nan seann Gh脿idheal.

Agus a r猫ir choltais chanadh neach ri neach eile, nam biodh e a鈥 d猫anamh mallachd air: 鈥Deireadh nan Seachd Sian Ort!鈥 Tha mi an d霉il gum biodh sin a鈥 ciallachadh gun tigeadh beatha an duine eile gu cr矛ch ann an d貌igh uabhasach.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bheir sinn s霉il a bharrachd air an 脿ireamh seachd an ath-sheachdain ach tha mi airson t貌imhseachan a thoirt dhuibh an-dr脿sta. D猫 th鈥 ann an Oidhche nan Seachd Suipearan. Oidhche nan Seachd Suipearan. Innsidh mi dhuibh anns an ath Litir.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Perhaps not all cadalagan or cadalain are cadalaichean ie hibernators. In Archibald Cregeen鈥檚 Manx Dictionary 鈥淔ockleyr ny Gaelgey鈥 a cadlag is given as 鈥渁 sleeper, a sluggard, such as sleep a long time, as the bat, butterfly etc鈥. However, Dwelly gives cadalag as a Gaelic equivalent of 鈥渟lug鈥 ie a little slumbering one 鈥 not meaning that it hibernates, but that it has a 鈥渟luggardly鈥 demeanour. The English dialect on Man has borrowed cadlag from Gaelg and it can mean a small lazy fish; this must be the same as our 肠补诲补濒补苍-迟谤脿驳丑补诲 (Dwelly p 145) 鈥渁 semi-dormant fish found on the shore. When any person was extremely slow at work, he was compared to the 肠补诲补濒补苍-迟谤脿驳丑补诲.鈥 Do any of you know the English (or Latin) for 肠补诲补濒补苍-迟谤脿驳丑补诲?

Gnathasan-cainnt na Litreach

S矛de nan Seachd Sian: terrible weather [lit. the weather of the seven elements]; Deireadh nan Seachd Sian Ort!: an imprecation which is really untranslatable but which wishes no favours on the object!
