Litir 604: Balgam M貌r

Bha mi ag innse dhuibh na seann sgeulachd Balgam M貌r. Chuir am mac a b鈥 貌ige aig a鈥 bhanntraich cr矛och air an t-soitheach a she貌ladh air muir agus t矛r. Bha e an d貌chas nighean R矛gh Eilean nam Ban a ph貌sadh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha an soitheach math air se貌ladh, co-dhi霉 bha i air muir no t矛r. Bha Mac na Banntraich na sgiobair oirr鈥. Chaidh e a choimhead airson sgioba. Bha e a鈥 se貌ladh ri taobh coille nuair a ruith fiadh a-mach aiste na dheann. Cha deach am fiadh fada nuair a th脿inig fear na dh猫idh. Rug e air an fhiadh.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淚s math a ruitheas tu,鈥 thuirt an sgiobair ris.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥淪eadh,鈥 ars am fear eile.

鈥淒猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair.

鈥淚s mise Lurga Luath,鈥 thuirt am fear eile.

鈥淎n tig thu leam san t-soitheach seo?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair. Chaidh Lurga Luath air b貌rd.

Cha deach iad fada nuair a chunnaic iad fear eile. Bha aghaidh ris an talamh mar gun robh e ag 猫isteachd ri rudeigin. Dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair dheth gu d猫 bha e a鈥 d猫anamh.

鈥淭ha mi ag 猫isteachd an fhe貌ir a鈥 tighinn tron talamh,鈥 thuirt e.

鈥淚s fhe脿rr dhut tighinn leam fh猫in san t-soitheach seo,鈥 ars an sgiobair.

鈥淣矛 mi sin,鈥 fhreagair an duine eile.

鈥淒猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair.

鈥淚s mise Claisneachd Mhath,鈥 fhreagair am fear aig an robh claisneachd mhath.

Cha deach iad fada nuair a chunnaic iad fear eile. Bha esan a鈥 sgealbadh na creige le a th貌in. Dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair dheth gu d猫 bha e a鈥 d猫anamh.

鈥淭ha mi a鈥 cur seachad an latha mar seo,鈥 fhreagair e.

鈥淚s fhe脿rr dhut tighinn leam fh猫in san t-soitheach seo,鈥 ars an sgiobair.

鈥淣矛 mi sin,鈥 ars am fear eile.

鈥淒猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair.

鈥淚s mise T貌n Chruaidh,鈥 fhreagair am fear aig an robh t貌n chruaidh.

Cha deach iad fada nuair a chunnaic iad fear eile, agus gunna ri a sh霉il. Dh鈥檉haighnich iad dheth gu d猫 bha e a鈥 d猫anamh.

鈥淭ha mi a鈥 d猫anamh cuimse air eun thall ann an 脠irinn,鈥 thuirt e. Tuigidh sibh gun robh seo a鈥 tachairt ann an Alba!

鈥淚s fhe脿rr dhut tighinn leam fh猫in san t-soitheach seo,鈥 ars an sgiobair.

鈥淣矛 mi sin,鈥 thuirt am fear eile

鈥淒猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair.

鈥淚s mise Cuimse Dh矛reach,鈥 fhreagair am fear aig an robh cuimse dh矛reach.

An d猫idh seo, chunnaic iad fear eile. Bha esan a鈥 sr霉badh lochan is a鈥 sp霉tadh an uisge a-mach a-rithist. 鈥淚s fhe脿rr dhut do chuid sp霉taidh a leigeil dh矛ot, agus tighinnn leam fh猫in san t-soitheach seo,鈥 thuirt an sgiobair.

鈥淣矛 mi sin,鈥 ars am fear eile.

鈥淒猫 an t-ainm a th鈥 ort?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich an sgiobair.

鈥 鈥楤algam M貌r鈥 a chanas iad rium,鈥 thuirt am fear eile.

Bha an sgioba a-nise l脿n. Ch霉m iad orra gus an do r脿inig iad taigh an R矛gh. Ach chunnaic an R矛gh an soitheach a鈥 tighinn. Agus cha robh e uabhasach de貌nach a nighean a thoirt do Mhac na Banntraich. Mar sin, dh鈥檌arr e air uaislean a鈥 bhaile mh貌ir gu l猫ir thighinn cruinn c貌mhla. Bha e ag iarraidh comhairle nan uaislean air a鈥 ch霉is. Bha a鈥 chuid a bu mhotha de na h-uaislean dhen bheachd gun robh c貌ir aig Mac na Banntraich air nighean an R矛gh. Ach ch矛 sinn d猫 thachair an-ath-sheachdain.听

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Bha Mac na Banntraich na sgiobair oirr鈥. Chaidh e a choimhead airson sgioba: the widow鈥檚 son was the skipper on her. He went to look for a crew. The apparent similarity between sgiobair and sgioba betrays a common origin in Germanic forms (many words starting with sg- are loanwords from Germanic languages, particularly Old Norse, eg sgeir, sgillinn, sg貌d, sgreamh). The origin of sgiobair might be the Scots skippare or English skipper but the Old Norse skipari meant a seaman or mariner, being derived from skip, a ship. Sgioba also derives from skip and originally meant a ship鈥檚 crew or complement. Nowadays, the meaning of sgioba has extended to include any band of workers or a team involved in a business, competitive or sporting pursuit.

Gnathas-cainnt na Litreach
