Litir 603: Balgam M貌r

Ann an Litir ceud, seachdad 鈥檚 a naoi (179) thug mi dhuibh seanfhacal as toigh leam 鈥 is fhe脿rr a鈥 bhl貌igh bheag le beannachd na a鈥 bhl貌igh mh貌r le mollachdthe little thing with a blessing is better than the large one with a curse. Is fhe脿rr a鈥 bhl貌igh bheag le beannachd na a鈥 bhl貌igh mh貌r le mollachd. Ann an cuid de dhualchainntean canaidh daoine mallachd seach mollachd.

Uill, bha mi a鈥 leughadh seann sgeulachd Gh脿idhlig o chionn ghoirid agus nochd an seanfhacal innte. 鈥橲 e ainm na sgeulachd Balgam M貌r, agus bu mhath leam a h-aithris dhuibh.

Bha nighean aig R矛gh Eilean nam Ban a bha anabarrach br猫agha. Bha m貌ran shuirgheach aice. Ge-t脿, cha ph貌sadh i ach am fear a dh猫anadh long a she貌ladh air muir agus t矛r. Cha robh e an comas aon duine sin a dh猫anamh, ged a dh鈥檉heuch feadhainn.

Bha banntrach bhochd an sin aig an robh tri霉ir mhac. Thuirt am fear a bu shine rithe, 鈥溍坕rich is deasaich dhomh bonnach, a mh脿thair, is falbhaidh mi, feuch an d猫an mi long a she貌las air muir is t矛r.鈥

Dh鈥櫭╥rich a mh脿thair agus rinn i d脿 bhonnach, fear beag is fear m貌r. Thuirt i ri a mac, 鈥淐貌 as fhe脿rr leat 鈥 am bonnach m貌r le mo mhallachd no am bonnach beag le mo bheannachd?鈥

鈥淏eannachd no mallachd 鈥 thoir dhomh am bonnach m貌r,鈥 fhreagair e agus dh鈥檉halbh e leis an fhear mh貌r.

Th貌isich e air an soitheach a thogail. Cha robh e fada ag obair nuair a th脿inig seann duine liath na rathad. 鈥淭ha thu trang, a Mhic na Banntraich,鈥 thuirt e.

鈥淭ha mi sin,鈥 thuirt esan.

鈥淢a bheir thu dh貌mhsa cuid de do bhonnach, n矛 mi do chobhair,鈥 thuirt am fear liath.

鈥淕u dearbh, cha toir,鈥 fhreagair an gille. 鈥淐ha bhi gu le貌r ann dhomh fh矛n mus cuir mi cr矛och air an t-soitheach seo.鈥

Agus, mar a thuirt, b鈥 fh矛or. Cha b鈥 fhada na dh猫idh seo gus an tug e suas an obair, 鈥檚 gun tug e an taigh air.

鈥淢a-t脿,鈥 ars an d脿rna br脿thair, 鈥渢h猫id mi fh矛n ga fheuchainn cuideachd. Ach, air a cheart d貌igh mar a thachair da bhr脿thair, thachair dh脿san.

Latha de na l脿ithean, dh鈥檌arr am fear a b鈥 貌ige air a mh脿thair bonnach a dheasachadh dh脿san, agus gun rachadh e a dh猫anamh long. Rinn a mh脿thair d脿 bhonnach. 鈥Gabh do roghainn,鈥 ars ise, 鈥渁m fear m貌r le mallachd do mh脿thar no am fear beag le a beannachd.鈥

鈥淭hoiribh dhomh ur beannachd, a mh脿thair,鈥 ars esan, 鈥渁gus beag no m貌r am bonnach, bidh mise toilichte.鈥 Fhuair e bonnach beag agus beannachd na chois. Thug e c霉l don bhaile san robh e agus r脿inig e an t-脿ite anns an robh aige ris an long a thogail.

Th貌isich e air an obair agus th脿inig an seann duine liath a-rithist. 鈥淭ha thu trang, a Mhic na Banntraich,鈥 thuirt e.

鈥淭ha mi sin,鈥 ars esan.

鈥淢a bheir thu dh貌mhsa cuid de do bhonnach, n矛 mi do chobhair,鈥 thuirt am fear liath.

鈥淕heibh thu sin,鈥 ars an gille, 鈥済ed nach eil e ro mh貌r.鈥

Th貌isich iad air an obair-togail a dh猫anamh c貌mhla agus cha b鈥 fhada gus an robh an long ullamh. Saoilidh mi gu bheil puing mhoralta anns an sgeulachd seo! Co-dhi霉, cha d鈥 r脿inig sinn Balgam M貌r fhathast. Feuchaidh mi ri sin a dh猫anamh an-ath-sheachdain.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

R矛gh Eilean nam Ban: The King of the Island of the Women. In previous Litrichean, I have mentioned nam ban as being the (irregular) genitive plural of bean, a woman or wife. Eilean nam Ban is not likely to be Eigg which bears the poetic name of Eilean nam Ban M貌ra (The Isle of the Big Women). Instead, it is likely an imaginary place, one of the Islands of the Blessed, popular in Celtic and Greek mythology. The green well mentioned later in the story (you鈥檒l have to wait!) is located in other tales on one of these islands which, according to some authorities, provides an origin for the name Brazil. If you want to find it, you鈥檒l have to look out in the Atlantic to the west of Scotland or Ireland!
