Johnnie Walker celebrates the 70s with classic tracks from both sides of the Atlantic. He marks 40 years since the release of Layla by Derek and The Dominoes.

Johnnie Walker remembers the decade of disco divas, dancing queens, and glam rockers. This week, he meets songwriter Bobby Whitlock and the engineer and producer Andy Johns to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and The Dominoes.

The album has long been regarded a hugely iconic and influential rock classic, achieving gold status within months of its release and always popping up in 'All-Time Greatest' lists as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame. The band was fronted by Eric Clapton, at a time when he was trying to escape the "Clapton Is God" moniker. They developed their sound whilst performing on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass before recording their seminal double album with producer Tom Dowd in August 1970.

Johnnie talks to the Memphis-born keyboardist and co-songwriter Bobby Whitlock and the engineer and producer Andy Johns (whose credits include Led Zeppelin IV and the Stones' Exile on Main Street) about the intensive six week recording process, the coming together of Clapton and Duane Allman, and the mixing of genres from blues, gospel and R&B. Not to mention the feted album title track, the infamous love triangle behind it and the short-lived nature of the band.

Also on the show a listener digs out their platform shoes or ripped punk T-shirt to remember what the decade meant to them in 'My 70s'.
