Litir 613: F貌ghnan na h-Alba

Bha mi ag innse dhuibh an t-seachdain sa chaidh mun 貌ran F貌ghnan na h-Alba a chaidh a sgr矛obhadh le b脿rd Loch F矛ne, E貌ghann MacColla. Bha mi anns an sg矛re san do rugadh e o chionn ghoirid agus tha e follaiseach gu bheil dualchas air leth G脿idhealach ann. 鈥橲 iad ainmean-脿ite G脿idhlig a tha a鈥 c貌mhdachadh na t矛re. Bha mi a鈥 d猫anamh beagan obrach le daoine aig Ach鈥 an Droighinn, seann bhaile beag G脿idhealach a thathar a鈥 gl猫idheadh mar thaigh-tasgaidh. Agus chunnaic mi an liosta de dhaoine a bha a鈥 fuireach anns a鈥 bhaile sin ann an ochd ceud deug, ochdad 鈥檚 a h-aon (1881). Bha G脿idhlig aig a h-uile duine aca.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Tarsainn a鈥 mhonaidh bho Ach鈥 an Droighinn tha baile beag air a bheil An Ceann M貌r no Kenmore. Tha carragh-cuimhne ann do dh鈥橢貌ghann MacColla no Evan MacColl, the Loch Fyne Bard, mar a th鈥 aca air ann am Beurla. Rugadh MacColla air a鈥 Cheann Mh貌r ann an ochd ceud deug 鈥檚 a h-ochd (1808). Chaidh an carragh-cuimhne a chur suas dha ann an naoi ceud deug is trithead (1930), agus Mac Cailein M貌r, Di霉c Earra-Gh脿idheal, ga fhoillseachadh.

鈥橲 ann ri obair-fearainn agus iasgach a bha E貌ghann nuair a bha e 貌g ach bha e follaiseach gun robh t脿lant aige airson sgr矛obhadh. Bhiodh e a鈥 sgr矛obhadh an d脿 chuid ann an G脿idhlig is Beurla. Anns na tritheadan th貌isich e air d脿in fhaighinn ann an cl貌 agus fhuair e cruinneachadh dhen stuth Gh脿idhlig aige air fhoillseachadh fon tiotal Cl脿rsach nam Beann. 鈥橲 e sin as coireach gun robh am frith-ainm air 鈥 鈥淐l脿rsair nam Beann鈥.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha m脿thair E貌ghainn 脿 Comhghall agus tha e coltach gun robh E貌ghann fh猫in gu math measail air an sg矛re sin air taobh thall Loch F矛ne. Tha cuid dhen bheachd gur e Moladh Abhainn Ruaile 鈥 ann an Comhghall 鈥 an d脿n as fhe脿rr a sgr矛obh e.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Dh鈥檉halbh teaghlach E貌ghainn a dh鈥檉huireach ann an Canada ann an ochd ceud deug, trithead 鈥檚 a h-aon (1831) ach dh鈥檉huirich E貌ghann ann am Breatainn. Chaidh e a dh鈥檕bair ann an Liverpool mar chlarc ann an seirbheis na cusbainn. Dh鈥檉huirich e an sin gu ochd ceud deug is caogad (1850). Bha e a鈥 fulang droch shl脿inte an uair sin. Chaidh e a thadhal air na c脿irdean aige ann an Canada agus chaidh obair a thabhann dha ann an seirbheis na cusbainn ann an Kingston, Ontario. Ghabh e rithe agus dh鈥檉huirich e ann an Canada. Bha e airson 霉ine na bh脿rd aig Comann an Naoimh Anndra ann an Kingston. R脿inig e deagh aois, a鈥 faighinn b脿s ann an ochd ceud deug, naochad 鈥檚 a h-ochd (1898).

听听听听听听听听听听听 Ged a tha carragh-cuimhne ann dha air cladach Loch F矛ne (tha e ann an 脿ite iomallach air nach bi m貌ran a tadhal), 鈥檚 e a bh脿rdachd as motha a chumas ann an cuimhne dhaoine e. Cuiridh mi cr矛och air an Litir le rann bho Moladh Abhainn Ruaile 鈥 agus tha mi an d霉il 鈥檚 an d貌chas gum bi na bric a鈥 sn脿mh innte fhathast!

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Traditional Gaelic b脿rdachd often has wonderful internal rhyming or assonance in addition (and sometimes in place of) the rhyming at the end of a line so well-established in English (and Gaelic) language poetry. I have here italicized the internal rhymes in the piece I selected for the final paragraph of the Litir. Read the verse out loud to yourself and listen to those rhymes and rhythms 鈥 they are complex and extremely satisfying. A mhuime nam breac, feuch siud iad a鈥 gleac, Rid chaislichean sneachd-gheal, steallaireach; An seo iad a鈥 leum an coinneamh na gr猫in 鈥 Mo cheist air na laochain gheal-tharrach! O, iasgair, bi clis! Siud fear dhiubh a-nis fo dhubhar a鈥 phris ud feitheamh ort; Cuir cuileag gun 诲脿颈濒 na rathad mas 脿颈濒濒 leat fhaicinn an 肠脿蝉 nach laghach leis.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

tha mi an d霉il 鈥檚 an d貌chas gum bi na bric a鈥 sn脿mh innte fhathast: I hope and expect that the trout will be swimming in her yet.
