Coming Second
Medical drama series. Sahira tries to keep her distance from a dying patient and his deaf son, while Malick has to control his anger when he treats a wife beater.
It's the day of the consultant interviews. Sahira is tested when a patient, Gary, whom she's previously diagnosed with a benign tumour, is readmitted with serious complications. She soon discovers that the tumour is now malignant. When he demands a second opinion, Sahira turns to Jac, suggesting they operate immediately. Jac disagrees, arguing it is too late. Sahira has to accept this when Elliot reiterates the diagnosis. When Jac tells Gary that his days are numbered, he can't hide his disdain for Sahira. He leaves the ward, taking some drugs from the trolley, and Sahira discovers him slumped at the wheel of his car. She resuscitates him, and is then faced with the challenge of helping explain to Gary's son, Thomas, that his dad is going to die. Consequently she misses her interview slot, and Jac gets the consultant job.
Malick deals with a patient, Malcolm, who claims he's been stabbed in a botched burglary. However, when his wife, Susan, is brought onto the ward from the ED, she suggests she wanted her husband dead. Malcolm admits to Malcik that he has been lying, and Susan attacked him after accusing him of having an affair. He was simply trying to protect her. However, both Malick and Ollie start to become suspicious of Malcolm as they discover multiple injuries on his wife.
Malick decides to give Malcolm a taste of his own medicine and substitutes saline for morphine, thus denying him pain relief. When Malcolm has to go into theatre, Ollie is worried Malick may have been responsible. While this isn't the case, Malick worries that he's got Malcolm wrong, as it appears Susan has a history of self harming. However, it all becomes clear when she comes round again and describes the history of abuse. Malick uses cunning rather than aggression to beat Malcolm.
