This week, as Radio 2 marks the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley's death, Johnnie revisits the golden age of reggae. He's joined by one of the era's defining photo-journalists, Kim Gottlieb-Walker.
Initially influenced by her mother, who was a photographer's assistant in the 1940s, Kim began covering interviews and concerts for local underground papers while working in the film department of the University of California. She travelled extensively, lived in London for a year and then returned to Los Angeles to work for underground paper LA. Over two years of historic trips to Jamaica and exclusive meetings in Los Angeles, Kim took iconic photographs of the artists who would go on to define the genre and captivate a generation.
Proud Galleries has worked closely with Kim Gottlieb-Walker to create a photographic exhibition of candid and intimate portraits, including never before-seen-shots and an intimacy born out of respect between artist and photographer. The exhibition, Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae, runs until May 15th in Camden, London.
Also on the show, a listener digs out their platform shoes or ripped punk T-shirt to remember what the decade meant to them in My 70s, and Johnnie spins three gems from a classic 70s album.
