Is the shop sign 'Only English Spoken On These Premises' racist?
Is it racist to have a sign in your shop saying 'Only English Spoken On These Premises'? Plus it's our weekly news quiz, Guess the Story.
At 1- Is it racist to have a sign in your shop saying "only English spoken on these premises"?
A hairdresser in Essex has caused controversy by putting a sign in her shop saying "Only English Spoken On These Premises - thank you".
The Manager of the "Cutting Edge" Hair Salon in Chadwell Saint Mary says she can't see what she's done wrong. She's refused to take it down despite being asked to do by local campaigners.
What do you think about this? Has she done anything wrong? Would you be offended by a sign saying that, even if your English is perfect? We all know Asian areas of Leicester, Birmingham and London where its difficult to get served in a shop if you only speak English. Is there anything wrong with pointing out that English is the only language spoken if that is the case?
Do you think this sign belies a racist attitude? Would you shop somewhere that displayed such a notice? The person who put this sign up has an Asian partner? Does that surprise you?
After 2- We're playing Guess the Story, call in and take on our panel in our weekly news quiz.
